Thanks, Philip, and great suggestions.  Will incorporate.

This is very nice Adam. The light under the bridge adds a lovely dimension and makes it seem more alive somehow. If I were to nitpick, I'd have cloned out the sign at right and the snow at the bottom. This is such a serene scene and I feel that those things intrude somehow. Here I much prefer the colour version because the extra depth that the colours add.

A "few weeks"?  More like a few seasons...

Have been away from this thread for a few weeks. Just learned of your return.

Welcome back Henry. I look forward to your ongoing contributions to and stewardship of this thread.

Kind regards,

Mark

Indeed, there is a youtube video of an interview with Ansel Adams in which he praises the digital age and in particular the digitization of film and the enhanced ability it offers to enhance one's artistic expression.

Quoting Ansel Adams:
'The negative is comparable to the composer's score and the print to its performance. Each performance differs in subtle ways.'

I do not see any harm in post processing a scan to correct or to enhance for artistic reasons. Isn't this broadly equivalent to darkroom techniques, accepting that software post processing and digital printing is likely to be inferior to wet tequniques.

Thanks, Antonio!

Spettacolare!

Thanks, Patrick!

The water reflection is pretty magical :)

So lovely !

I just love this color palette and the delicateness you have obtained in the contrast level.  Very classic quality.

Surely, this must be the SL that Henry meant :) Looks great in Shirley's hands, methinks.

Public protest of the new US tax reform legislation (last week on Wall Street).  This lady was rambling and frankly didn't even know what the hell she was saying....

But I've heard but I'm not sure how accurate it is, that silver gelatin printing can be produced using a digital record of the negative. It seems plausible given it's another light source.

This is right. There are a variety of options.

1 - DeVere makes an enlarger that has a facility to print from digital files onto silver paper. In place of a film negative they have an electronic device that creates an transparent image. I have never seen one, but DeVere is a good name, so...

2. There are a number of labs that will take a digital file and make a silver print. There is Digital Silver Imaging (Boston I believe) and Ilford Lab Direct. I have tried them both, and I was very pleased and impressed. I think there are others.

The down sides are that the DeVere is expensive, and the labs take some time (usually about 10-14 days from when I send the file) and some money (but nothing outrageous).

The results were excellent. But I can do as well with my focomat 1c and Ilford Multigrade Classic paper. I have used Ilford Lab Direct 2-3 times when I wanted a print larger than I can conveniently make myself. I don't stock big paper, and I only have 2 big trays. And I want big prints only every 2-3 years for something special (e.g. a request for something big from a friend or family member).

When it comes to architecture my taste runs to the extremes: if I cannot have Notre Dame, just give me the basics.

Another from the protest with Adox Color Implosion...

These were all shot wide open at f1.4 btw.  Not great light.  But impressed with the detail in the OOF areas provided by the modern lens.

One of your best.

Serfdom? I suppose I will have to find and re-read my copy of Gogol's Dead Souls. I must be missing something. I need a refresh.

Thanks. And you did not miss anything.  No free lunches were handed out at the protest...
