My new Pacific Imaging scanner is starting to show a purple right border, plus many other annoying problems, so I just purchased a Nikon Coolscan V from an online seller. I hope it works properly so that I get rid of this cheap junk.

From Lebanon:

Edward , the purple doesn't come from your film ? have you this purple band at the same place

every time and on every picture ? Look at your negative with a magnifier

Nice landscape

Thank you Henry!

Yes it's showing in every shot, always on the right border. It just started to show about a week ago and doesn't go away.

Have you a office strong light near your scan ?

I mean office lamp ?

Also no. The room where I scan is actually very dimly lighted. I'm quite sure it's some problem with the scanner hardware, maybe the LED light. Anyhow the Nikon is on the way and I'm quite excited about it. I used to have the coolscan 5000 about 10 years ago and it was outstanding. I hope the V will be nearly as good.

The 5th row is staring, too :)

Another shot from a stroll through Berlin. One of the many bridges over the river Spree. As you might know, Berlin has more bridges than Venice. But to stay clear, Berlin has a lot less bridges than Hamburg...

Nice picture! I love Agfa CT 100 Precisa. Did you make any correction afterwards?

In waiting for your Nik scan, can you send a message to Pacific CS ?

The coolscan V is as good as the 5000. I have both and I use mainly

Thank you for the heads up Henry. Good to know it's as good. I certainly plan to use the excellent Nikon Scan 4. It's already installed on my PC waiting for the scanner to arrive :) I will contact the customer service of Pacific Imaging sometime soon but I will have almost certainly to send it back to the US.

Wow Otto what nice definition and black-grey tone of this tree  :)

Wonderful black

You know you are always welcome in this thread  :)

Thank you for sharing with us

Yes I know I'm welcome Henry haha, thanks and I do sort of support your cause with some nuances as you may remember: I see a great surplus-value of film or its right of existence in the esthetic sense, and we should all support its enduring existence but this counts for me especially for the larger formats than 35mm. What's more I can still cry a river or get desperate by the thought that this whole AGFA tradition has vanished in just a few years when nobody seemed to notice : Record Rapid, Portriga Rapid, AGFA Classic (multigrade). Some films and developers are saved by others, like Rodinal en APX-film, but their most difficult and special products, their papers are gone. It's an artistic shame for humanity.

What you're saying about the tones in this photo struck me too: wonderfull midtones without the whole image getting dull (and with a HC110-B made from a stock-solution with a shelf-life of 5 years!). There is a guy here (in the German forum mainly, lambda or so), who makes very good work with a very individual style and signature which he summarizes with the slogan: 'fuck the midtones'. When the above photo came out of development another slogan popped up in my head: 'in praise of the midtones' !

My first photo with my new Chamonix 45F-2, wonderfull 4x5 field camera. Tri-X320 in HC110-B, what a special combination this still is!

Otto thanks for your comment.

Midtone ? it's a confusion Otto, I want to speak about shade of grey and shade of black,

important in one picture , not midtone , lack in digital

That's my conclusion after 8 years of M digital . Finally the nuance is very important in b&w

and also  in color IMO.

It's not only grey and black ,  as you see in digit picture , but the shade in grey and black exists,

If you still have digital cam., take the same picture and compare them.

I already do it and I continue to do it , because I still have my digit cameras and I want to show you

proofs.

Your picture posted  has a certain relief because you have this "nuance" >  Image is not "flat".

Along these 1960 pages , many contributors of this thread here show us this big difference with

their pictures and the difference comes sometimes from film brand

Yes you're right in the sense of better words used for the issue at hand. Don't prove me, I can prove you :) : I compared for instance this analogue combination with the Monochrome1 shooting the same scene. Digital prophets will say: that's because digital hasn't enough digits yet, with the Nikon 48Mp you'll see the progress. I doubt that. What I see here in this image of a tree, is the natural character of the tree whereas the digital image gives me a perfect representation or translation of a tree into another system/language.

... continuation of my flower roll test :)

this kind of picture has no equivalent in digital !

because of the grains of film , it's logical... and the ability of

film to capture the "difference" here in color but also in b&w

You said "nuance"

This was made in the Basilica of St. Nazaire and St. Celse, Carcassonne.

Carcassonne is wonderful – a very large medieval city/fortress that was a centre for the Cathars in south-ish France, not far from Toulouse.

XP2, 35mm Summaron 3.5, if anyone is interested

Yes I'm very interested: I made such a type of claire-obscure photo in the cathedral/mosque Mezquita in Còrdoba, with the Summaron 3.5. On Kodak TMZ3200, but the same idea of blacks to highlights. Unbelievable how far I could go in the darkroom with dodging the shadows without loosing contrast and definition. Worth a try with this one! Edited by otto.f
