Some more from the house meeting in my hometown Bradford, UK.

 

Doc Henry asked me if I knew the people :-

 

"I walked into the mosque one Sunday afternoon and I asked the Imam if I could take some pictures. I went back over many weeks and they realised that I wasn't going to "turn them over" and they became friends and some of the most hospitable people that I have ever met. I was invited to a wedding, into a Maddrasa and then finally I was invited into their homes. Never once did anyone give me any hassle or object in any way to anything that I as doing. All people are the same the world over and religion is very important to the Pakistani community of Bradford and I tried to reflect this devotion in my photographs. They respected me and I respected them"

 

The pictures were taken on a Leica MP with 35mm Summicron V4 lens. The film was Kodak TRI-X pushed to about ISO 3200. I aren't really sure what the ISO was exactly as I set the camera to a 1/30th at F2 as this was just about the limit of the light and hand holdability.

 

The film was developed in D76 1+1 for 18 minutes. A speed increasing developer would probably have been better but I standardise on D76 and that is what I always use.

 

Paul you're lucky to photograph the closeness of this people 

Pictures are all great and the value is stronger

Film has a nice rendering through all your series , I doubt you can have

this ambiance and the beauty of pictures with digital

Adam, thank you very much. You have read my mind regarding the chromes. I think they would result in quite contrasty images since the celing lights will really beat down on whatever is below causing strong shadows. I will bring a second film magazine with something else in it. Perhaps I'll rotate that mag and shoot some scenes with Provia and some with my new friend XP2 or Acros. But Ektar does seem to be the best choice. I don't think I want to take the risk that Cinestill goes belly up on me and ruins the shots.

You guys really are too fast for me ...

As I have lots of work at the moment I thought I'd shoot one of these over the date Agfa Portrait Colour film with the very vintage wooden camera I presented, some time ago.

And yes, Henry, I have put one roll of this film away for You. If You have a 6x6, or a 6x9 camera ... well any cam that takes 120 roll film , just tell me.

I gave the film to the local photographer, simple devellopment, scan of the photo as I have little time for more at the moment.

Not a great shot, but I simply love the way this old camera still works. Less side light than the last time, as I put black scotch tape around the back. Some "flare" ( is this called "flare" in English , the way the sun comes in on the bottom ? ), but I don't care.

Jean-Marie you know old camera can sometimes give you great picture

The flare is nice and show us that picture is taken in little contre- jour

advantage to have two cameras without changing roll when shooting

and without converting color in b&w in LightRoom > not nice black !

Sometimes you perceive after b&w is better than color ...

Compton Bay is one of the best beaches in England IMO and suitably popular. However, if you arrive at about 5.30am you get the whole beach to yourself. The town of Freshwater Bay in the distance is just starting to catch the sun as it rises above the downs.

Paul - Stellar series; so insightful.  I'm on the fence as to whether color would have also been very effective.  Certainly the B&W is effective; not saying it isn't.  But color also has its window into how it was really like in those scenes.  It is good to have choices!  Keep up the great work!

I'm finally back in Ontario after spending the summer out west, and I just started developing my backlog of rolls.  Here's one of the first images from my new 0.85 M7.

I'm sure there's no PP going on here, looks like mist and I'm wondering if it's a picture of a print. I love the grain. Grain done artistically is the main attraction for me. God, I wish I could produce stuff like this!!!

Hi Adam thanks for your feedback - I do appreciate it.

 

I much prefer B&W for my type of pictures but I know that you yourself use colour very effectively for your pictures.

 

I am always and always have been drawn to B&W photojournalism and to be honest other than family pictures on my Leica R6, I have never once taken a colour picture with any of my Leica M cameras.

 

I have always stuck to Kodak TRI-X because I like the gritty contrast that the film gives. For photojournalism I also like the way that it can be pushed and pulled - I have taken it up to ISO 3200 and pulled it back to ISO 100 which to me is amazing that one film can give such a broad range of speeds with just the dev times being adjusted.

 

The other day I was searching through my old archives of my daughter when she was young and came across this slide of her on Ektachrome so just to give a nod to my colour work, I post it here:-

She is now 26 and a successful journalist on a daily Uk paper.

 

Really superb this portrait color first and general rendering

This Gentleman was walking down Northumberland Ave and as I passed he admired my Leica M6 and we got talking. His family had fled Nazi Germany before WW11 and his father had been a keen Leica photographer.

Paul - Wow, what a wonderful color photo!!  I love it!  As for your amazing reportage, I think they look fantastic and very authentic in B&W.  If that's your thing, you should keep on rocking.  

It looks like you found yourself in a Lubavitch Yeshiva.  They are amongst the most welcoming (their mantra is out-reach), unlike the folk in Williamsburg, Brooklyn where I do my weekly Challah runs.   They look at me like I'm from outer space, and that's sans my camera!

 

In any case, keep up the great work and I look forward to you sharing more...
