Hi David in the majority of cases , I don't post processed  as I wrote under each pictures I post .

As said Erl , it's important to have a good camera , lens (Leica) and film and have a nice photo from the start :)

(for definition , the proof when you crop or when you enlarge for print).

In general the slide gives an image with unmatched beauty , some films like Kodak Portra 400 or 800 or Ektar  is almost the equivalent
Kodak is one of the brands that meet its criteria , Fuji also and some other brands.

The richness of the film far exceeds that of the sensor by the nuances that one can find, look at the photos of Adam's sunset , the palette of color of Ektar is extraordinary as an artist's painting :)
One last thing , develop yourself is better and in black and white print on paper with a good enlarger !

Best

I like very much this picture portrait with this little blur

I see that Portra 400 no wonder as said in the previous post to David :)

Film and camera MP give a certain advantage for this picture

On June 8 we had one of the most dramatic sunset I've ever seen.

In anticipation of something nice (but fully expecting to get what I mostly get, which is nothing), I made arrangements to hop over to Brooklyn to shoot it after work.

First choice was the Brooklyn Piers.  But the tide was high and the piers  were hardly visible.

So I scooted (with my new electric kick scooter, which I LOVE) over to my favorite spot and decided to camp out amongst the dozen or so digital photogs who were already there.

I set up the SWC, loaded the Ektar (also brought Tri-X but didn't end up using it), positioned the 3 stop medium ND grad as best as I could and pulled out my spot meter.  Luckily I had a unused kitchen trash bag in my camera bag and used it to sit on. I sat there for about an hour and my bladder was about to explode.  But it didn't, and instead the sky did.

I have 5 photos to share illustrating the evolution of the sunset.  Would love feedback.

Thanks Henry

I do my own B&W development and had a darkroom for a long time (pre Leica) ...usually FP4 plus. But often just use scans from my lab for colour. I don't change them.

I think a lot of partipants scan and post. Thanks for the reply ..this forum is one of my favourites.

All best..

Here one picture not corrected .Why ? because if you correct the original atmosphere is lost.

More luminosity, more processing ? no you'll not find this sunset like this as I see after a storm

that day . In digital we take the habit to process , it's obligatory , I did it during 8 years and you

modify your starting and original photo without realizing that you are doing it .The software of

the digital camera can give you a photo of the night as a photo of the day ! you distort the original

picture, it's why I call a "synthesis" image

Kodak Portra 400-Leica M7-Summicron 28 Asph

Portra dev myself in Tetenal 38°C 3mn 30 sec

Nikon Coolscan 5000 with factory RGB calibrated and Nikon software , not Vuescan !

scan in Tiff > direct Jpeg for post

Baie de Somme (France)

at sunset and at 7 pm

No correction :)

Adam,

Lovely story, and great picture. The city seems to burn!

Though I wait now with anticipation for #2 - 4.

PS: And I am sure your parking worries are eased by using the scooter!

Sometimes it's difficult to choose. Must I take this picture with the red dress and with the background

of Notre Dame cathedral , despite the bad weather ? ... and not corrected after the image ?

Finally I decide anyway to photograph because I will never have this opportunity :)
