Not because I needed another camera system (not by a long shot!), but because I wanted a kind of everyday camera that would have a 35mm lens that was more expendable, if worst came to worst, than my Leica and Summicron. Anyway of course the one i happened to buy came with a few lenses (not the 35!), then my brother-in-law very kindly gave me the 35mm - 70mm zoom he had left over from when he had a Contax, and I eventually acquired a 35mm. In the end I found that, when using it, all I really wanted to be using was my Leica, so I sold it. Its sharp, contrasty lenses did form rather a bewitching partnership with Fuji Velvia 50 though! The Contax G seemed to have everything going for it until you looked through the viewfinder. If Contax could have married a proper Leica RF view with those lenses I think the camera might have been irresistible as an AF alternative to the M system. Over the years I accumulated the 35, 28, and 90; still have them. Earlier this year I made an attempt to shoot with the G1 and discovered I could not adjust to autofocus. I just did not feel right. This truly is a great place to hang out. Philip - the moment of a photograph is so ephemeral isn't it? Yet the photograph itself isn't. I guess they were talking about the pressing issues of the day - probably largely based around the newish Prime Minister of the era, Mrs Thatcher. And, yeah, I do wonder what their views would be today - perhaps the fierce passion of youth may have quieted somewhat? Maybe not. Wattsy - thank you. Yes, I really liked everything about the camera. Didn't even mind the small viewfinder (loved watching the ingenious way it changed when you zoomed!). But the experience just wasn't as good for me as with using my Leicas. So in the end I got a Summaron (then, dammit! a second one) for about the same price as the Zeiss G 35mm and now am much happier going out and about with that on an M2 everyday. Henry - ah, yes, Velvia 50. There is nothing quite like it is there? A nice match with those Zeiss lenses, but lovely too with Leica lenses (or Nikon, Minolta, Pentax or anything else!). Wayne - thanks again. The autofocus was one thing I didn't really gel with either. It's pretty good as these things go but I found I was far happier manual focusing, and again that is a lot easier done with the Leica. In the end, every time I now toy with a different camera, I kind of wish I'd just used the Leicas because they're the cameras I really feel most comfortable using. Can't hold a candle next to my Leica lenses, but I think I may have some interesting times in store for this bad boy i(which is waterproof up to 10 feet - and has a built in flash ) in the extreme rain storms. The camera has a f2.8 lens but is complete automatic in terms of exposure and aperture setting; although it has a very easy to use set of manual focus settings) Here is a stock photo of the camera, and a few from the day in lower Manhattan.
