At the risk of overburdening the thread, some more flash stuff, all 35/1.4 and Vista 400.

Hi Philip - I give you high marks for your efforts!  A+ across the board!  It is not so easy to muster the courage (or, as we say, chutzpah) to point a flash at strangers, particularly in the night.  I hope that you find this kind of shooting as stimulating as I do.

I am not sure what you are after with these, but if you would like some constructive comments regarding the potential to make this type of shooting have broader public appeal, read on.  If this is not what you are after and/or you do not wish to receive any comments, do not read any further past this point.

It seems, though, that many if not all of these photos were shot from the hip.  This may be necessary as a way to get your feet wet, which is perfectly fine and there is definitely a learning/comfort zone curve involved.  But I would encourage you to try to frame your shots with your eye and take full control over exactly what you want to get in your frame.

I also think that to achieve the look that you want, you should try to get closer to your subjects.  This is particularly important at night since the background will invariably be blacked out, creating lots of dead space.  Getting much closer will capture those intimate expressions and facial details that are so interesting on a broad level.

Would love to see more of this genre from you!

I think in my last post of my daughter demolishing an ice cream i mentioned the fact that the film scan was terrible due to the rushed supermarket processing. Well I just got a chance to rescue some shots from this roll. So these shots were taken with my Nikon F3 on Kodak Ektar 100.

Lovely memories captured very well, Christopher.  Thanks for sharing.  Seems like you, me and Ian have daughters about the same age. :)

1/15th??? Well done.

Gary

Thank you, it's something I have practiced all my life, with a 50mm lens I get about 75% good at 1/15, 25% at 1/8, it helps that I have been a competitive target shooter since I was 12, that teaches a steady hand.

Great shot Adam, the extra exposure giving some of the flakes missile-like looks.

Gary

Thanks, Gary.  And please don't hesitate to call it how you see it!  I totally respect your honest opinion!  These photos are not for everyone, and not all of the photos from this series share the same level interest.  There are a few that have many more elements than the others.  Completely get it.  I appreciate you slogging through the good, the "eh" and the even not so good with me.   I'm afraid that I have a few more coming down the pike before I get it all out of my system!

Please keep the honest and direct reactions coming!!!

Wow, that's some strong contrast, Gary.  Interesting film.  I somehow recognize that tree from one of Keith's recent photos?

Two parts to that.

One is my likely heavy-handedness in "processing".

The other, and I neglected to mention it. I used an Orange filter.

Back to the war zone....  :p

M7, 28mm elmarit pre-asph, Portra 400

Adam, this pic I like, even though it is a Caucasian chick (please excuse the Oz slang!) and therefore brighter figure.

Have you considered using 2nd curtain synch on your flash? I think it would change the dynamics, and therefore the look of the image.

Just a techy thought.

No worries Adam. And in a completely honest frame of mind, I'd actually typed out that I liked this one in particular, but was near saturation point with the blizzard series. But that doesn't mean you should stop posting them, as this shot completely floored me, it's the same, but different, in a better sense, through the "movement" of the snow.

I wimped out however and thought, "hey I can't say that", so deleted it.

Gary - yes, I saw your initial message as that was the version that was sent to me by instant notification (not the edited version).  I liked the original version better!! :)

Thanks, Erl.  Can you choose the second shutter on an M7?

I am really an idiot when it comes to flash.  I just point and shoot and hope for the best.  So often it all comes down to various elements falling into place along with a streak of luck - and not so much the execution of a technically correct workflow.  But I am always open to suggestions!

Wow that's fierce Adam. Just looking at that shot makes one want to get indoors. I think it's one of my favourites from you, it evokes an almost physical reaction due to the sheer volume and speed of the blurred snowflakes.

Thanks for your comment earlier. (Middle of night here, just woke having crashed on the sofa! Need to get some proper shut eye before dawn.) Yawn.

Best wishes

Just downloaded the M7 manual (couldn't remember from when I had an M7), and it's evidently possible but only if the flash used supports it, and I cannot tell whether the unit you use is one of them.

Definitely worth trying though, if your flash supports it.

Thanks, Gary.,  I don't really know what this function will do.  But I will look into it...

I've never tried it either, but given your penchant for daylight flash, I'd say definitely give it a whirl.

Try first curtain, then second curtain, see what the results look like. The concept is easier to comprehend when you are talking about a car or similar moving, and the lights trail.

Snowflakes? Not so sure you'll see a difference, but try it.
