I spent much of my younger days bumping around Somerset, though more around the Mendips than way down Dorset way. Love the very many sleepy old churches and villages in that corner of the world - look at all that lichen and moss! It takes a lot of time and even more miles to realise you actually miss the smell of the pig manure and fog filled frosty mornings Yes, a lichenologist could probably spend all day examining those headstones. This part of Somerset does feel a little timeless. The A303 thunders only a mile or so from this church but people using it generally seem to be passing through and the villages in the area remain sleepy and relatively unheralded compared with those further north or south into Dorset or Devon.
