Advertisement Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Hi erl, Take a look here I like film...(open thread). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cwolffensperger Posted May 22, 2016 Share #15862 Posted May 22, 2016 Neil, you might try Vuescan. You can download a free trial, and get watermarks in it, but you'll still be able to look at the colors. I have Silverfast, but not using it anymore since getting Vuescan. It's way easier to understand, and you can calibrate every roll easy for its colors. In my opinion it's also faster (which you might like [emoji6]) Try it for free, and if you like it but it. gbealnz Posted May 22, 2016 Share #15863 Posted May 22, 2016 I'll add to the chorus singing Vuescan's praises, but add that since getting my latest Plustek I have been using SilverFast more (than Vuescan). Occasionally I hit the wall with SilverFast and try Vuescan. Sometimes it is "better" but not always, and the more I use SilverFast then easier it gets, for me. I have both and couldn't make a suggestion of one over the other. Both are excellent, with Vuescan being tied to the owner not the scanner (SilverFast is tied to the scanner, big time). Gary So, if you are operating say three scanners, as I am, Silverfast is NOT a good option. A point to note about VueScan. It is for SCANNING, not correcting. Scan the max info from your file with VueScan, then CORRECT in a dedicated software program of your choice. Mine is PS Vivesa 2 plugin. Brilliant and fast.
gbealnz Posted May 23, 2016 Share #15865 Posted May 23, 2016 I take your point Erl, but in my case, and in Neil's we are both operating a single scanner. Although given Neil's ability to become a major shareholder in B&H, anything is possible. I'm looking at Vivessa as we speak, will give that a go, after Vuescan. Trev Posted May 23, 2016 Share #15868 Posted May 23, 2016 Okay I just bought the Vuescan software and it sure looks more user friendly. Below is the settings I am using.............does anyone have heartburn with these settings?? Neil i wouldn't scan to RAW, use TIFF. Raw will give you an inverted image which will need more PP Did you check out my reply to your previous post re 1st colour scans. Good help in that link.
Doc Henry Posted May 23, 2016 Author Share #15869 Posted May 23, 2016 (edited) New scanners come with software in general that the manufacturer has developed except a few brands that deliver without softwareWhy not use it, it's easier right ?With the Epson V700 I had, there was the Epson scanner software and SilverFast comes with the scanner.I use the software from Epson, no update, no additional charges, no Vuescan Neil scan in Tiff equivalent of the negative film , as said Trev so you can correct easily if necessary Rg. Okay, maybe panic is over.....maybe Fishing village in Hoi An Portra 400 Initial thinking is f%$% it ........shoot B&W and be done with it. I will have a better idea if what I just said actually happens after I have finished scanning the next 10 rolls There are a lot of nice colors in this that really represent what it looked like on that morning, some of the other scans are way off though

Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted May 23, 2016 Share #15879 Posted May 23, 2016 Okay I think I have got the hang of this shit again. I'm still taking ~8 minutes per 3 scans with Vuescan but the last out I had to do nothing except crop out the neg border Portra 400 Vietnamese girl......pretty one at that Welcome, dear visitor! gbealnz Posted May 23, 2016 Share #15880 Posted May 23, 2016 I'm the least qualified around here, scanning is a new interest to me, but can I toss this out there. For my roll that I am looking to do something with (and bear in mind I deal in "roll" singular, not gazzillions like you, but.............) the first thing I do is scoot through them on a quite low-res scan, and stash them to make a digital contact sheet later. Then I can view the low-res scan and select the ones or ones I want to work with. This is similar to what happens when I wet-print, make a contact sheet, select the neg or negs for enlargement and go from there. Gary
