Wow, there have been a lot of great photo's added since I last got to visit, and more contributors. I don't know how I'm going to catch up. I haven't taken any photo's for about a month, but shot 4 rolls of 120 this afternoon in failing light, so I haven't lost the taste.

These are from when I was still in Singapore (BW400 - M6 w/ 35mm Summilux):

Nice perspective Neil

The straight black marks top left in the sky come from the scanner or film ?

Henry

NeilI was wrong, if these are the marks on the photo of the bridge, this is not a problem

of wetting or drying spots

As I said in a previous post, it comes from the scanner or film. Watch your negative with a

magnifier. It is on all the roll ?

I'm excited enough to illegally post a digital photo: my first two E6 films properly developed and hanging up to dry.

First E-6 films by chrism229, on Flickr

The scans will be forthcoming, and both films were polished off quite quickly to give me a substrate for the new chemistry. The pictures may not be earth-shattering, but they show it can be done.

Bravo Chris :D

I just wait for drying my roll of Portra

roll just finished yesterday and developed to day

What pleasure to get my roll on sunday :D

No waiting for the lab closed  today ... and no scratches

H

in addition

Chris I found that after 6 months and a dozen rolls of Portra 400

and 160 , the developer is dead  :(.The Portra 400 uses faster the developer

than 160

Thanks Doc, had a run at it over the last couple of days and did 3 rolls of 120 and 4 rolls of 135.  Didn't prove as difficult as I thought and even though it was all done with the same batch of chemicals they all look ok, so very pleased so far

Henry,

There is an issue with E6 chemicals that relates to your problem with faster colour negative films. E6 chemicals, once diluted, are said have a very short working life - but what is the truth? The instructions claim a few days, but the experiences of others here say up to several weeks.

Theoretically:

The first developer is supposed to be a mixture of phenidone and hydroquinone. We have all used them for B&W film. Ought to last far longer than a few days!

The colour developer is related to that used in the C-41 process (CD3 versus CD4, both based on p-Phenylenediamine) and I know from experience I can keep that, diluted, for several weeks

The Blix is supposed to be much the same in both C-41 and E-6 processes

My E-6 kit has no stabiliser (apparently dropped for reasons of public concern about the carcinogenicity of formalin). I used the stabiliser from my current set of C-41 chemicals, which contains miconazole and a detergent).

As always, I used some PhotoFlo after all that, just because I don't like drying marks.

So the E-6 First Developer and the E-6 Colour Developer are in squashed-down concertina bottles in a fridge, as is the Blix from the E-6 kit (but I ran out of concertina bottles and it is in a green glass wine bottle). I will use up their remaining six film capacity over the next two or three weeks, and you will be able to see if the quality drops off.

I expect it to work out nicely. If the chemicals have a restricted life once opened and diluted, it makes sense to buy small volumes and use them fairly quickly. The one pint kit will not cover a reel holding a 120 film, so I have had to wait for the one quart kit to be available. I suspect we are being instructed to be far too paranoid and that these chemicals will actually last much longer than officially stated. Let's find out!
