Guest Posted March 10, 2016 Share #12401 Posted March 10, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Menzingen - Ilford XP2 film by -Ric Capucho- I struggled on the composition, with this one. The power lines, the cross, and the shape of the hill. All there, but for some reason it didn't quite frame right on the M6 and 50mm Summicron. I shall return sometime with the Rolleiflex and a tripod and see what I can do. It maybe that a simple change in exposure might make the tree contrast better. Or with a snowy background. Hmm... 'Adam & Eve' can be seen on the summit of Tryfan. I had a 12x4 foot exhibition print made from this scan. Fuji GX617 Fujinon 90mm Lee 81a Lee .9 soft nd grad Fuji Velvia 50 nice one, Steve. 2 questions for you: 1. what scanner do you use for the 6x17 negs 2. What's your rule of thumb for using the 81a vs 81b filter with the Velvia 50? I shot a couple more rolls of graffiti last Sunday (late afternoon) with the velvia 50 and used my 81B for those that were in the shadow areas (and also has quite long exposures, b/n 1/4 and 1 sec). I don't have an 81A and so only had one choice. I am glad that I did this as the filter removed the blue cast from the image and preserved the rich colors. Having said this, I don't know whether an 81A would have been sufficient. I image that there is no science although I'll bet that there are rules of thumb and I'm eager to learn about other people's workflow on this. Thanks, Adam

Ric Looks nice Ric, w/ or w/o the power lines. The power lines add a dimension of geometry, but then again w/o the lnes you'd have more zen. How about a silhouette against the backdrop of a strong sunset or sunrise (depending on what direction you are facing)?

Guest Benqui Posted March 10, 2016 Share #12405 Posted March 10, 2016 Come on Adam, enough colors from the walls!!! I have seen that the Velvia produces really beautiful colors, but now again more street and landscape!!!!! all the best Marc P.S.: Please do not take it personal and of course I do not want to insult you, but I am sure you tolerate a straightforward remark. philipus Posted March 10, 2016 Share #12406 Posted March 10, 2016 Great stuff Ric. This is exactly the kind of photography I like so much. I am wondering if 'undressing' the image of its elements could be a way forward (though it is a very striking image as is, too), for instance by moving closer or cropping to show only the hügel, the cross and the power lines, and then play around with offsetting the cross from the centre of the frame to increase the negative space of the sky etc, or even tip the camera a bit perhaps. Snow and light from other directions would create an entirely different (but most likely equally strong) photo. Did I say great stuff? p Menzingen - Ilford XP2 film by -Ric Capucho-I struggled on the composition, with this one. The power lines, the cross, and the shape of the hill. Not to offend you, but I am really a fan of your street style and landscapes from New York. So feed me again! very funny, Marc. And no offense taken. What can I say, though - as a New Yorker who drives by this stuff all the time in amazement, this is something that I've wanted to do for some time as a small project of sorts. And then a thought about how the velvia 50 might be an excellent match so I took it up as a way to get to know the film better. These murals are only up for a few months at most, then they are either painted over or the space is given to someone else. So encapsulating these in this fashion (large 6x9 velvia 50 negs) is something that I think could have some long term interest (in a book and/or as large prints). So I will have to bore you to tears for the next couple of months, although I will of course mix things up every now and again, as I always try to do. Guest Posted March 10, 2016 Share #12413 Posted March 10, 2016 Thanks for the ideas, Adam, Philipus and Chris. The power lines are a constraint, but at this time of the year it's "ok" to walk across farmer's field because of the snow on the ground. So I should be able to return and try again to contrast that tree against the snow. I'll also try to find a way to shoot under or around the power lines. We'll see. There's also a shot nearby that area where there's a church on the skyline with three trees nearby... But last autumn the trees were pretty much the same colour as the grass field around them... but with snow on thhe ground... Hmm... Currently a bright sunny sixteen day, so shall await bad weather! :-) Ric

A miller Posted March 10, 2016 Share #12417 Posted March 10, 2016 Marc, Adam is in a period of looking for inspiration this is why.... More photos Adam , I like vivid colors In few minutes , I'll post some Velvia for you and Steve Best Henry Thanks, Henry. I see so many photos of graffiti and wall murals on this forum and on the internet. Although much of the subject matter is (to me) striking and really a thick slice of artistic pop culture, most of the photos are woefully unprofessionally taken and rendered, with colors that are out of balance and lines and angles that are not symmetrical and level. Having said this, I have seen some photo books in the bookstore containing only photos of NYC graffiti and wall murals that are really well done and capture the "moment" very (very) well. So I'd like to try to build a nice collection of "proper" photographs of these. And the velvia (and careful leveling) seems to be the key to doing this. I am not a cityscape photographer, or a street photographer, but a NEW YORK photographer. I want to capture everything that is New York and build a mosaic over a period of time that is something special. A high (perhaps too high) aspiration, indeed! To me the grain distracts too much for this particular subjectmatter. Is the grain tameable for this film (not that I don't like grain, but as a matter of choice) by using a different developer? Perhaps something like Perceptol, which on one side may reduce the grain while possibly increasing the contrast a bit? Best regards Christoph
