I've finally found a fast-turnaround high-quality film processor (one who doesn't give me back dirty & scratched negatives) in Sydney and finally got a very efficient scanning workflow set up at home.

So I'll be posting film more often now here, the Australian Landscapes thread, and other threads...

but I have no intention of abandoning digital! Can I say that on this thread Doc ;-) ?

Henry,

A very sad day indeed!

I was in Paris & Honfleur just a year ago.

Pierre , as a physician I see the suffering and death every day and not bother to add

Thank you for your compassion.

I didn't finish my roll of XP2 in the M7 this morning - hopefully tomorrow I will. So here's a photo of Pippa taken as we were at the airport going away on honeymoon in 1980:

and when we got there:

I couldn't begin to afford a Leica in those days as a medical student, so this was taken with a K1000, 50mm/f2 and the old Ilford FP4. Happy days!

Sorry not to post for some time....

Henry - thoughts are with you all in Paris. I was at the bus bombing in London in 2005 helping deliver acute care. Don't think I will ever forget it.

If its not to heretical I have sold my 35mmCron to fund buying a T (forgive me Henry) so I have a couple of rolls left to develop from the M4 which I still have and will likely be doing film with my OM1n for a while...which will preclude me from contributing until I get another M lens...

Anyway - 2 shots of why life is precious and what really makes the world turn for most of us, I suspect

Mark - I just hope that you finally come all the way around sooner rather than later... :)

Looking forward to seeing more.  And please shoot more with Ektar (things and not so much people, unless they are very dark skinned)

I won't be coming all the way around. I like my digital - not better, not worse, just different depending on what I want to photograph and my mood at the time.

Funny you mentioned Ektar. I've just bought half a dozen rolls as I'd not used it for a while.

Although much more versatile, Portra just doesn't cut it compared with Ektar for resolution/image detail, and I really like Ektar colours.

I agree, Mark
The portras are wonderful but I also find them falling a little short of delivering punchy colors and resolution that takes the scene that we see to a different level

I do, though, find that the ektar is more finicky when it comes to exposure. Unlike the portras, which often work well slightly overexposed, with the ektar the aim should always to expose exactly correct. I typically will use my Minolta spot meter F to take an average exposure of a given scene. I will then check to see where that average exposure has given me zone 5 and confirm that is where I want it. I will then check to see which zone the average reading has given the brightest parts of the scene Then I'll do the same for the darkest part/deepest shadows. If the darkest zone is below 3 and/or the brightest zone is above 8 I will typically look to make compromizing adjustments so that the important subjects in th scene are most properly exposed. All this bullshit just in an effort to satisfy ektar's rigid exposure requirements. I also find that ektar doesn't perform optimally in high contrast situations, and performs better with scenes containing good natural ambient light.

Just my two cents after blowing through thousands of dollars in ektar over the past six months.

Good thing it is about 25% cheaper than the portras here in nyc :)

Sorry - a Leica T typ 701 - a digital AF cameral designed with Audi..its actually very nice but v different to film...

Paul ,as I said to Mark , it's according to your desire, everyone does what he wants.

Personally I am tired of having to correct photos, if I want it approaches a little of the film

in b&w as in color. :)

Elsewhere, that's what the photo software are trying to make , do you not noticed that ?

But it must be recognized that digital is "convenient" and "immediate".....  as my iPhone

(with Sony sensor)  :)

Paul ,I had a meeting in Paris last week :(

Lol! Are we not a broad church here? I like the immediacy of colour with the digital .... But no plans to ever stop black and White film, which is quite simply incomparable.

Sure and I agree

... with deep black with no "banding" , very nice nuance of grey and the pleasure

to develop himself and have pictures with his enlarger

Best
