   Hello Henry,

   i like the first

reasons: the geometry of the water's edge to the left like me better - i see people on the left in the fog - despite fog i see the boat clearly

#1 for me on the web, as the fog is more convincing

on a print, i dont think you would get the same texture of grain in the second. My guess is that it would be smoother, and thus more pleasing to my eyes.  Th grain in the second looks a little pixelated to me on the web

Henry - just viewed both photos again on a larger screen and noticed that #2 is framed differently.  So to clarify my comment above, I like the framing of #2 better but the rendering of #1 better.  Best, Adam

I am posting two images taken on the same evening.  One of them I have already shared but I include it here again so that you can give me your opinion of which you like better, if any.  Thanks in advance.

Initially I said to myself "#2". Then I looked at both a few more times and feel that #1 is my pick. The empty space mid-section draws the eye in. I started liking the dark and foreboding rocks in #2, but then felt they actually "cluttered" the image.

Just me though. Both are exeptional.

Hi Adam

I like both, well done. Photo #2 is nice because of the layers, rocks, poles, buildings, sky. I think an image like this becomes strong due to symmetry and simplicity. I like the runway-like empty water leading the viewer into the skyscrapers and that the water has more texture. So #1 wins for me. The only thing I would consider changing is the crop (but keep the framing/ratio). On the right-hand side I would remove the piece of building (or is a tree?) at the edge. This would put the little cloud very close to the edge but that doesn't disturb. It's a bit like a mole on a beautiful woman's face, if you see what I mean, the slight imperfection that elevates the beauty of the image. On the left-hand side I would move the edge to the right so that it either is just to the right of the closest pole or cuts through the second-closest whole pole.

This is from the Japanese garden here in The Hague. It is open for two weeks during the autumn and this was on the last day. Though I shot with fast film I shot wide open in the hope that it would give a sort of painterly effect.

Interesting question, I see them as different photographs and not a comparison. I like the symmetry of the first, it is an easy picture to look at, while the second my eye is taken on a tour, settling on the foreground first, before being drawn to the open sky on the left before completing the circle and returning to the foreground. As an emotional experience the second picture then is more satisfying. (For me)

Sorry again for the late reply , sometimes I ask mysel if not to do another job * .... :(

To go back to two photos above let me explain  :

the two photos were taken at the same time but within a few minutes, until I change the Summicron 28 to -5 ° C from M8 to M7 (yes it's cold, I had frozen fingers, and it was a freezing fog at 7:00 am)   runners for the first picture are gone (rightly noticed by Ingrid but sorry)

To answer Adam, I've just developed the photo 2 on photo paper , it is much prettier compared to the first developed on paper inkjet Epson by my laboratory Leica Council !

Let's say , the photo 1 digital is ordinary , certainly very clear, It's suitable but for an artistic photo with a soul , the film of picture 2 is much better.

Thanks all specially Ingrid, Adam , Pierre to let your advice about these pictures :)

Here some fog pictures print on paper Ilford "bright "

The two fog pictures are taken with

M8 320 Isos + Summicron 28 Asph and

M7 + Summicron 28 Asph + Ilford HP5 400 Isos

Adam I like both as Philip but with a preference for the second  who has more spatial effect with rocks in the foreground

The color is superb on both of your pictures. Good work Adam and thanks for sharing so nice landscapes of NY

Thank you, Philip.  I really appreciate your comments.  I will have a go at the slight cropping later tonight.  I didn't even notice the fraction of the lightpole on the far right.  I think cropping that out couldn't hurt.   And I probably could do that w/o eliminating the small cloud, which from my perspective is really critical to the image b/c it is pink and lets the view know that the bluish sky in the upper right corner  (in which the tiny pink cloud sits) is really blue sky and not a problem with vignetting or poor PP.  The color range from warm to cool running from the left to the right is, to me, part of the interest of the photo.

As for the cropping on the left side, I will play around and see if I can make a tweak work without losing too much of the orange area on the horizon, which I think is important to the color palette.   (But I do see what you mean about the slight errant pole on the extreme bottom left corner.)

Thanks again.

Looks like I may be in London on the week of the 15 and then again on the week of the 30th, if you or anyone else feels like squeezing in some shooting before or after work hours in central London (or possible from Canary Wharf, where I will be staying)...

Best,

Adam

Thanks again
