Guest Walt Posted April 3, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm wondering what kind of speed people are getting downloading images from the SD cards to the computer. With Kingston "120X Ultimate" cards and a dual Core Duo/15K SCSI computer, a full 2 GB card is about an hour to download to the computer, which seems completely implausible to me. I am using a generic USB 2.0 reader. Is this normal or is there a faster reader? Any suggestions are most welcome. I can back up 50 gigabytes of data from this computer to an external USB 2.0 hard drive in about an hour. Thanks, Walt
Advertisement Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Hi Guest Walt, Take a look here SD file download speeds?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted April 3, 2007 Share #2 Posted April 3, 2007 No that is not normal. I shot about 1GB's on Saturday and when I downloaded them it took maybe 3 minutes. Either your reader is bad or the card. It also could be you have the reader connected to a USB 1.1 port on your PC instead of a USB 2 port.
wparsonsgisnet Posted April 3, 2007 Share #3 Posted April 3, 2007 Walt, one of the new usb-2.0 readers will speed things up by a factor of at least 10! I use a Sandisk Imagemage 12-in-1 reader that cost $40 and it is in the bag with the camera. The change is *amazing* ! I got the reader just so as to have a device I could use away from home, and the speed blew my mind.
cbretteville Posted April 3, 2007 Share #4 Posted April 3, 2007 About 3 minutes is what my system uses to download a 2gb card. An hour indicates an error somewhere. Check your connectors. If you have access to another cable with the same plugs try that, borrow a card reader or simply get a new one.
Guest Walt Posted April 4, 2007 Share #5 Posted April 4, 2007 O.K. I tried another card reader and the hour download is now about 4 minutes. I believe the first one was not actually a USB 2.0 unit. The packaging said "USB 2.0 Compatible," but the unit itself only has the USB logo. So, this Comp USA "CameraMate SD Card Reader" is in the garbage. Sometimes things that seem implausible actually are. Thanks for the help, Walt
Guest sirvine Posted April 4, 2007 Share #6 Posted April 4, 2007 "USB 2.0 compatible" is like those drink labels that say: "contains real fruit flavor"

Teroterava Posted April 30, 2008 Share #8 Posted April 30, 2008 Hello Friends, The file loading speed has discussed already years. "Geoff" wrote some goog points two years ago: Card readers must show "SDHC"-logo (to meet SD Card Association specification) and the USB 2 High Speed (i.e. USB logo). My external card reader LaCie Imatumi dos not have these logos, but works acceptably. The internal card readers are for some reason still slower. Now i have tried to find an acceptable internal card reader, and found only one: Attach Flash PROGear XM-5U. But the problem: this is available only in USA, and the shops deny to deliver to Europe (19.90 dollars ??). --->> Do somebody know, how to get said Attach Flash PROGear XM-5U to Europe (= EU-countries)????????
