wda Posted May 15, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted May 15, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) A link on the RPS site led me to view some fine exhibition photographs by Dr Jouhar including this one taken with a 9cm Elmar on film using 1/4 second exposure. There are several others on the site dedicated to this successful amateur photographer taken with Leica camera and lens. Here is the link: Dr. S.D.Jouhar (1901-1963) - A Retrospective: "An Old Story" - 1944 Â I am often amazed by the quality of work produced in 'olden' times when relatively long exposures were normal for indoor portraiture. Â According to the item I saw, Dr Jouhar's grandson refers to a possible forthcoming exhibition of his grandfather's work and would could be well worth viewing if it comes to pass. Advertisement Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Hi wda, Take a look here Dr S.D. Jouhar F.R.P.S. (1901-63) - early Leica user. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jouhar Posted September 17, 2013 Share #2  Posted September 17, 2013 I have recently joined the forum, and came across this post from a few months ago. It is still in my thinking to mount a retrospective exhibition of my grandfather's work - he was a prolific producer of exhibition prints, and I have over 500 of them, plus approximately 30,000 negatives. Many of the prints were exhibited at The London Salon and The RPS.  It would have been nice to do the exhibition in 2013, which is 50 years since he died, but there is no hurry - it will happen eventually. In the meantime, if you are interested, you can see examples here   Regards Kelvin Jouhar

jouhar Posted September 30, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted September 30, 2013 Kelvin, thank you and Welcome to the forum! It is good to have you here and grateful for your knowledge and inheritance. Â Thanks David. Â Amongst all the material I have in my possession, I have found quite a few very early Leica Postal Portfolios. I know that my grandfather started using a Leica in the early 1930's and I have quite a few portfolios from around 1936/7 onwards, which must have been right at the start of the LPP. jouhar Posted October 8, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted October 8, 2013 The early Postal Portfolios in my archive have criticisms written by, amongst others, C.C.B. Herbert, who I believe was President of the Leica Postal Portfolios for 20 years. His huge collection of railway photographs, mostly taken with a 35mm Leica, are in the National Archives. jouhar Posted October 8, 2013 Share #8  Posted October 8, 2013 Have you considered contacting the RPS and perhaps even submitting an article for the RPS Journal - I for one would be interested to see such images in print which is always an excellent way to view their virtues?  This is a good idea Paul - thank you - in fact my father had an article entitled "Dr S.D. Jouhar, FRPS, FPSA — Fine Art Photographer" published, about 20 years ago, in Volume 93 of The PhotoHistorian (the journal of the Historical Group within the RPS). This followed the retrospective exhibition of Dr Jouhar's work that had been mounted at the Orleans House gallery in Twickenham in 1991. Perhaps I should review that article and re-submit it.  The last time any of Dr Jouhar's prints were publicly displayed was in April 2010 at the 120th anniversary exhibition of the Richmond and Twickenham Photographic Society. I was very proud to be asked to open that exhibition, and make a speech, as the grandson of Dr Jouhar, who had been a Founder member and the first President of the Twickenham Photographic Society between 1938 and 1946.
