marknorton Posted April 2, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted April 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been persevering with the wide accessory strap (Leica Camera AG - Photography - Wide Camera Carrying Strap) after the split rings it came with damaged the strap eyelets on one of my M8's. Â Yesterday, I discovered that the silver finish screws which fit through the holes in the leather to set its length are like emery boards and will mark the black chrome. If you don't believe me, try rubbing the screw and domed heads against a blank CD... Â I grasped the strap and the top of the camera together, the two rubbed together and now I have an arc-shaped scratch on the back of the top panel, centred on the right hand eyelet. Â Take it from me, this strap is Bad News, get rid of it and stay with the stock one which comes with the camera.

j. borger Posted April 2, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted April 2, 2007 That's why Luigi's straps have those little pieces of protecting leather between camera and the rings ...! And leatherprotection over the metal to adjust the length. Check them out Mark .... great straps! wattsy Posted April 2, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted April 2, 2007 Looking at the design of that thing, you would be forgiven for thinking that Leica had found an old box of leather straps dating from the mid-1970s.
Hans Roggen Posted April 2, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted April 2, 2007 I have put a bit of tape around the screws. Does not look very good, but at least it doesn't scratch the camera housing or the lcd. Â Hans
rosuna Posted April 2, 2007 Share #5  Posted April 2, 2007 A good idea would be to buy the Camera Protector:  http://www.leica-camera.co.uk/photography/m_system/accessories/cases_and_straps/2219.html  I will buy one.
marknorton Posted April 2, 2007 Author Share #6 Â Posted April 2, 2007 It was the sharp ends of the rings which damaged the eyelets, and I thought I had solved the problem by using the U rings from the standard strap instead. Â The camera protector would not have helped, it's scratched above "Made in Germany". Â I agree that tape would have solved it but so too does going back to the standard strap! charlesphoto99 Posted April 2, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted April 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I highly recommend the upstrap (upstrap.com). It's very similar to the Leica standard strap, but really does feel more secure on your shoulder. Good thing for $8k of kit.
photorunner Posted April 3, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted April 3, 2007 I prefer the artistan and artist straps. They're a little pricey but well worth it. Have a look Artisan & Artist* Â Herb
Hans Roggen Posted April 3, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted April 3, 2007 I would have gone back to the original strap if i didn't pay so much for the wide strap. When i have some spare time and nothing better to do i think i wiil remove the screws alltogether and sow the ends together with some black thread. I'll post a picture once it's done. Guest maddin Posted April 3, 2007 Share #10  Posted April 3, 2007 I have put a bit of tape around the screws. Does not look very good, but at least it doesn't scratch the camera housing or the lcd. Hans That is a solution, however I use a PE shrink tube normally used for insulation of cable shoes. Pull it over and heat it up so that it shrinks covering the sharp edges of the screw. Double layer even better. The leather cover I find on my Luigi strap does not stay firmly fixed over the (frightening thin looking) metal buckle either.  As mentioned the camera protector does not avoid scratches of the screws on the lense barrel and on top of the camera.  For the rings I use the triangular ones avoiding the ring ends to scratch the eyelets. The standard U-rings would need a bit bending to fit under the leather strap and to be able to be covered by the leather bands.  Eventually one might prefer settling for the standard strap. cheers
Guest stnami Posted April 3, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted April 3, 2007 How many times do some of you guys have to be told.............don't take the camera out of the box you might scratch it...sheerrrshk!!
chris_tribble Posted April 3, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted April 3, 2007 But's what so bad about the original strap - I've used it with M6/M7M8. Wraps around your fist if you need to just carry in your hand, tensions against shoulder or elbow if you want to stabilise for slow shutter. Never scratches, never slips --- why spend more when you've already bought something that works... Â Or am I missing a point somewhere?
stunsworth Posted April 3, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted April 3, 2007 Chris, I've used the original style of strap with an M2, M3, M6 and now M8. I haven't seen the point on changing.
