I've Dumped the Wide Strap

I've been persevering with the wide accessory strap (Leica Camera AG - Photography - Wide Camera Carrying Strap) after the split rings it came with damaged the strap eyelets on one of my M8's.

Yesterday, I discovered that the silver finish screws which fit through the holes in the leather to set its length are like emery boards and will mark the black chrome. If you don't believe me, try rubbing the screw and domed heads against a blank CD...

I grasped the strap and the top of the camera together, the two rubbed together and now I have an arc-shaped scratch on the back of the top panel, centred on the right hand eyelet.

Take it from me, this strap is Bad News, get rid of it and stay with the stock one which comes with the camera.

It was the sharp ends of the rings which damaged the eyelets, and I thought I had solved the problem by using the U rings from the standard strap instead.

The camera protector would not have helped, it's scratched above "Made in Germany".

I agree that tape would have solved it but so too does going back to the standard strap!

I would have gone back to the original strap if i didn't pay so much for the wide strap. When i have some spare time and nothing better to do i think i wiil remove the screws alltogether and sow the ends together with some black thread. I'll post a picture once it's done.

I have put a bit of tape around the screws. Does not look very good, but at least it doesn't scratch the camera housing or the lcd.

That is a solution, however I use a PE shrink tube normally used for insulation of cable shoes. Pull it over and heat it up so that it shrinks covering the sharp edges of the screw. Double layer even better. The leather cover I find on my Luigi strap does not stay firmly fixed over the (frightening thin looking) metal buckle either.

As mentioned the camera protector does not avoid scratches of the screws on the lense barrel and on top of the camera.

For the rings I use the triangular ones avoiding the ring ends to scratch the eyelets. The standard U-rings would need a bit bending to fit under the leather strap and to be able to be covered by the leather bands.

Eventually one might prefer settling for the standard strap.

cheers

But's what so bad about the original strap - I've used it with M6/M7M8. Wraps around your fist if you need to just carry in your hand, tensions against shoulder or elbow if you want to stabilise for slow shutter. Never scratches, never slips --- why spend more when you've already bought something that works...

Or am I missing a point somewhere?
