If I read the RRS site correctly, it seems that this configuration would not work on an RRS tripod, except with a screw attachment rather than QR lever. Do I have that wrong?

This is timely since I'm considering a RRS TQC-14 tripod and BH-30 head for travel use, coupled with the RRS M plate.

Ah, I use this with a Gitzo tripod. I don't know whether it would work with an RRS tripod. Sorry if I misled you.

But my question to Peter was specifically about his recommendation regarding use of the head and plate made by Arca, not just in the the style of Arca.

At any rate, here is the relevant info quoted from the RRS FAQ regarding use of Arca style plates...

"Only Really Right Stuff, Wimberley, and Kirk (manufactured within the last year) will be compatible with our lever-release clamps. However all Arca-Swiss style plates work with our scew-release clamps. "To ensure compatibility with lever-release clamps, we offer $22.50 trade-in discount towards a purchase of a Really Right Stuff quick-release plate if you use a plate from Kirk, Foba, Markins, Arcatech, Novoflex, or Arca-Swiss. Plate exchange only for identical model; you must send your plate at time of exchange to qualify for this discount." (see page 31 of the Really Right Stuff catalog for more details)."

I prefer to have the QR lever, so unless I'm mistaken, I think I'll need to stick with the RRS plate, which is Arca style, but not by Arca as Peter suggests.

Jeff,

My Novoflex Arca Swiss Type QR plate on my Novoflex rotating collar does not fit the RRS PCL-1: Panning Clamp or the RRS CRD-Rail: Vertical rail w/ on-end clamp- these are both screw clamps. It does fit the RRS B2-mAS small screw clamp. So it appears that some, but not all of the RRS screw clamps will lock to all of the Arca Swiss Type QR plates. However, I would guess that the smaller RRS screw clamps like the B2-mAS and the larger clamps may.

By the way, though the RRS lever clamps are sure and lock well and faster, I do not find that I can adjust the position of the plates quite as accurately as the screw clamps (the plates can slide a little as the lever clamping is applied).

Wilson the vertical extension is the "L" part of the assembly. This allows you to mount the camera vertically in your QR clamp ballhead while retaining its location directly over the centre of the tripod. That is very useful for a series to be stitched for example.

The additional tripod sockets I guess are a belt and braces option since the point of the whole thing is to use the QR clamp system instead.

I would add that despite the apparent similarity of the fastener locations, you can not mount the "L" bracket on the opposite side (at least on my sample). This would have been useful to put the viewfinder at the top , which would help with clearance for left eyed shooters.

RRS have put a lot of effort into improving the holdability of this one. The lower profile of the "L" barely intrudes in your left hand. I leave my plate on all of the time. In fact your thumb can nestle neatly into the gap to assist when you push the focus tab around. The whole thing works very well and I don't mind the slower detachment method of the captive thumb screw. The plate also just mates without tilting which is convenient when fitting.

Geoff thanks for the explanation. If my back keeps giving out at its current rate, I may have to give up on my depleted uranium Manfrotto stuff. I am thinking of a Berlebach wooden tripod with a nice lightweight head. The RRS grip looks very nice but I bet if I ordered one, by Murphy's Law, the Leica MF grip would arrive the same week.:)

Yes - the plate attaches directly to the tripod bullhead. It provides a firm location that is much "kinder" to the camera in terms of stresses. Arca Swiss is a manufacturer and their name seems to be a bit like Hoover - used as a generic name for the fitting. I have a Kirk head, but there may be others (obviously in addition to AS and RRS) that are compatible - they usually say Arca Swiss style. There is a German supplier of RRS gear - PM me if you want name.

Make it public, if not PM me please.

I reeived the bottomk RRS plate for my M before I even got the camera, back in early June. Duh, the plate that came with camera is in a drawer. I am very happy with the RRS plate. It is sturdy, and with the BH 30 ball head, and the little RRS table top tripod.

To me the grip option of the RRS set is unattractive (too large and wrong design) but I really like the base and L for when I want tripod mounting. I have gitzo legs with RRS ball heads .

But the removal of the USB port from the M body makes tethering impossible without the multi function grip... gaaah!

Three mutually exclusive options

For just improved handling I think the plain Leica grip is the best

For tripod work with what I have the RRS set is essential

For tethering in studio then the multi grip is essential.. And also made of a platinum/unobtanium alloy apparently based on price and availability !

I can't foresee their being enough demand for RRS to tool up for a version that fits the multi grip sadly... Sigh.
