M8 Charger

Hi Dear

My M8 charger appears to be dead after my recent trip to Bangkok. It fully charged my M8 battery successfully at 220V in Bangkok. That is the last time it worked for me.

After I return to HK, its green light is faintly dim when I plug it to the main. There is a low periodic buzz sound. No orange light and the battery is not charging.

Anybody here have experienced the same?

Don't know whether my dealer will replace one for me by warranty. And anyone here had successfully purchased a spare M8 charger for backup? I'm very interested to buy one more for backup even if my dealer can replace one for me.

You know, I now got only a full battery left, some 300 shots left... That's digital.

Best

Matthew

I have a strong suspiscion that these chargers and batteries, neither of which are made by Leica, are the root of a great many problems with the M8. Nothing scientific, but a lot of evidence points in that direction.

My a/c side of the charger suddenly stopped working a few weeks ago. The d/c side however still works so I bought an ac/ to d/c converter that works through a car charging outlet & charge the battery accordingly. The charger went out the day before a trip & this was the solution other than trying to charge it in my rental car.I am in the process of seeing if Leica can replace it prior to me turning it in otherwise I'm stuck without a charger for a while.

I have had a buzzing charger. Known dead batteries appeared to be fully charged (when I knew they were not) within 10-15 minutes of the charging cycle. I just sent the charger back to my dealer, and they took charge (no pun intended). My new charger is working OK so far. I am planning to buy another spare charger, because I am very inclined to think they are the culprits of the M8 sudden death syndrome ( look for a thread with MSDS in the subject line), together with faulty batteries.

I actually bought a spare charger - easy to find, and I hope I'll never need it. I just got it for insurance after all the "rare" problems people have had with the M8, etc. I also got 2 spare batteries. On a recent trip to Guatemala, I needed more than 2 batteries per day. Inaddition, my original M8 battery only held a charge for about 60-80 exposures - and indicated more left when it was discharged (obviously being returned replacement):) .

The evolving M8 system remains a wonderful picture taking machine with high "maintanence" costs.

Regardless, I'm very happy with it - would be even more so as the problems get fixed.

I've seen mention here and there of a source of very cheap off-brand batteries in Hong Kong that come close to matching Leica's proprietary battery.

Does anyone know the name of the supplier or have a link?

The Leica charger is the biggest chunky brick charger I have ever seen. I wish there were a nice 3rd party charger, I'd buy it in a minute.

You wouldn't be able to buy it in a minute because I would have beaten you by 59 seconds. 8-)

I also suspect the charger and/or batteries could be the root of the M8's 'sudden death' problems.

When I first saw the charger I was very disappointed by the shabby look and feel, and the recent photographs of the insides of the thing in this forum confirm it is not something that is well-made. The plastic used seems very rough and cheap. It simply doesn't look like an object that should be included in the same box as the Leica M8.

Leica should hire Mark Norton!
