Ted Lemon Posted April 2, 2013 Share #1 Posted April 2, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) For those of you still with ‘coffee stained’ M8’s this might be of interest as I have just exchanged my M8 for a new ME on the Leica exchange programme. I was only offered a new ‘in-stock’ ME (as opposed to the M9/9Ps others have been offered). I am happy for an ME as the new M is a bit over the top (functionally) for my needs and the ME nicely compliments my M Monochrom (my main camera). The process to achieve this was simple and Leica CS excellent. The total turnaround for the exchange was 3 weeks including posting my M8 (minus battery) to Solms and receiving the new ME. The financials were (all taxes included):- 1. Leica charged me £2,282.00 (obviously plus my M8) for the ME 2. A new ME at Red Dot (my dealer) is priced at £3,900.00 My M8 was in good, but far from mint, condition so the notionally exchange/used value of £1618 appears reasonable looking at the current UK market. Leica's email just said "we will offer you a new ME in exchange as we have them in stock" - did not ask the question of available M9/9Ps so one can read into that what you will. I wanted the ME so did not pursue the M9/9P - or M240 for that matter! By the way the ME came with a M9 logoed warranty slip so there is an indication I guess (if we did not know already!) that some ex-M9 materials are being used up with the ME production run. I see there are other topics on the forum regarding the possibility of Leica ending ME production and extensive M240 wait times so that must be an interesting discussion at the Solms daily marketing/production call! There's so much useful information here! I expect I'll get better at finding info as times passes. Following on from that I wouldn't think that Leica's cache of part-exchanged M8s is too much of a problem. There are bound to be bits which are useable for repairs. I wonder how many people like their coffee stained camera (and especially its monochrome and infra-red potential) too much to part with it? Jeff As long you don't use wider as 35mm! Look at FAQ at the Leica site on support! I still use them with my M9 on 35 and 50 summicrons! No problems what so ever! cheers! Henry I admit I am afraid that my M8 will develop this issue some day, but when it does I will just live with it. The screen isn't really good in the first place. And I have an M-E already. Going back to Philipp's post, I very much wish I'd been a user on this forum for much longer, there's always so much good stuff on it and people are genuinely helpful. If I did not have an MM I would have kept the M8 for its wonderful B&W capability. I used the ME to do some corporate portraits yesterday and it was a joy to use with 50 and 75mm.
