jonoslack Posted April 5, 2013 Share #101 Posted April 5, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Of course, except in absolutely controlled lighting situations there won't ever be a 'right' answer anyway - the different light temperatures between shade and light in any scene can vary wildly - our eyes make decisions we accept, but how is the camera to decide? Yes and digital colour almost always looks awful in these kind of indoor 'use the light as you find it' (lowish mixed temperature) photographs and the new M looks like it is carrying on that tradition. HI Ian I wasn't talking about indoor light - you just try taking a sunlight and shade reading outside. all the best

thighslapper Posted April 6, 2013 Share #102 Posted April 6, 2013 Banding and Tartan....... Well.... this is mentioned elsewhere as an M 'issue' I cannot find any ..... so I have had to make some..... by racking up the shadows as much as possible in LR ..... Then a bit of Lumunance and Chroma noise reduction...... no impact on the overall image at all.... No doubt there will be yet more 'M failings' that turn out to be virtual non issues in practical use.... Welcome, dear visitor! thighslapper Posted April 6, 2013 Share #103 Posted April 6, 2013 in fact ..... although its easy to see on the 100% crops on iMac its almost invisible on these Jpegs ..... so here are two more with the exposure upped to ridiculous levels so it is now easy to see (but the photo is rendered hideous and unusable) ..... ok.... so we've lost a bit of detail after correction...... in an insignificant part of the picture .... in hardly visible shadow...... that's barely noticeable whilst pixel peeping at 100%....... disaster !! thighslapper Posted April 7, 2013 Share #104 Posted April 7, 2013 A set of ISO and noise comparisons between M9 and M240 First set is the basic image M9 always first and M240 second Below are the original full sized images. These are hand held using a 35/2 at f2... aplologies for the dog who kept getting in the way Each subsequent set of 4 are for the same ISO (nb. I omitted 160 and 320 to keep it simple .... not much difference at near base ISO's). They are corrected for exposure and white balance to be a close as possible. I have concentrated on a crop which has an area which shows up noise easily.... and has some detail to show what noise reduction does..... First pair are M9 and M240 100% crops as shot Second pair on each line are M9 and M240 100% crops corrected as best I can in LR4.4 to eliminate the noise ..... and preserve detail as much as possible At higher ISO's this becomes a matter of taste and judgement ...... but it does give you some idea of what is achievable. Apologies for squint horizontals etc, but these are real world tests of the sort you would be faced with in an unplanned situation ..... after half a bottle of wine .... and with a dog persitently shoving a tennis ball in my face .... krooj Posted April 7, 2013 Share #120 Posted April 7, 2013 Thanks - it's probably one of the best examples to illustrate the ISO ceiling difference between these two cameras.
