swing Posted April 2, 2013 Share #61 Posted April 2, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello,Dear Zenny and frends. Thank you for an introduction to my blog and flickr. I am an amateur in the photo. I also like the camera itself, just like taking pictures with the camera. It is not a good photo, I'm glad it is helpful. Thank you. Advertisement Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Hi swing, Take a look here Comparison of M9 and M240. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
thighslapper Posted April 2, 2013 Share #62 Posted April 2, 2013 A few more pictures to show the detail available in M240 images. Quite frankly, I cannot see any reason to want more detail than this unless you have a contract for roadside billboards. These are with sharpening pushed from the default of 25 to 70 in LR4.4. Ok, so the Nikon 800e might be better .... but do you need it ... and are the images as good as these .... ? M240 75/2 at f8. 100% crops..... Welcome, dear visitor! jonoslack Posted April 2, 2013 Share #63 Posted April 2, 2013 Oh, I think you are talking yourself down and I applaud your willingness to post comparisons between the two cameras. Jono doesn't like to, for good reason, it's a largely thankless task. HI Mark - I quite agree - I think he deserves a great deal of credit for posting such sensible and intelligible comparisons (and your remark makes me feel rather guilty). Added to which they aren't even boring (surely a necessary characteristic of any serious work ) I think we should all slap a thigh in thanks.

thighslapper Posted April 3, 2013 Share #67 Posted April 3, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) The M9 Auto image is actually close to the correct colour balance for this subject ... possibly a tiny bit cool ......and comes in at 4500K All the M240 images are too warm. The disparity in bright conditions like this is much less than when its cloudy, when the auto WB settings on the M240 produce very yellowish images....(examples soon) Below are some more pairs of different subjects...... thighslapper Posted April 3, 2013 Share #70 Posted April 3, 2013 This time the M240 does much better on Auto ....... both cameras come in with temp values of 4700 .... the same as daylight on the M9 and this is in fact correct for this image .... they only vary a little in the tint setting.... More again below in the same format...... M240 first....

thighslapper Posted April 3, 2013 Share #73 Posted April 3, 2013 Again the Auto M240 and M9 settings and Daylight M9 are all almost identical and reasonable ..... the actual stone is possibly more grey than in the photos and was in deep shadow as the sun was directly behind and above....... but the grass looks ok.... thighslapper Posted April 3, 2013 Share #76 Posted April 3, 2013 Here the M240 auto is actually not bad ...... possibly a little cool .... and all the other images including the M9 Auto and Daylight are too warm...... The correct balance lies somewhere between the M9 and M240 auto ..... Discount images 2&3 for the M240 as the sun went in..... What does all this show....... Well a general observation is that the M240 emdedded WB correction is set too warm...... most of the time ..... and its worse in dull/cloudy conditions. As I have said before .... if you dial in the settings from a correct M9 image in LR4 to the M240 equivalent you get identical images. I will try and do some indoor/low light comparisons and a set in dull weather .... as I'm in the UK you won't have long to wait.....
rirakuma Posted April 3, 2013 Share #77 Posted April 3, 2013 Thigh thanks a lot for your comparisons. I really appreciate all your work and I've even looked at some of your dng files to try comparing them myself. After looking through some of these files I was surprised to find that the M and the M9 looks so identical after a WB fix. You're one of the guys that has convinced me positively to get the new M. Now I want to say this respectfully but I'm still skeptical on how the new M renders skin tones. The problem is I haven't seen many samples on the net with desirable skin tones unlike the hundreds I see with the M9. Any chance you could do a portrait comparison under ideal lighting conditions? thighslapper Posted April 4, 2013 Share #80 Posted April 4, 2013 The M9 auto and daylight are the same temp (4700) but vary slightly in tint .... and are probably the nearest to what was there when I took these. All the M240's are substantially too warm. Interestingly auto WB in LR bumps the temp up to 6500 and they look very yellow. Marching over the images with the dropper produces odd results are there are no true grey tones in this image apart from the tarmac in front of the metal gates...... which produces a similar image to auto from the M9 I tend to go by the grass .... which is currently half dead due to the weather ..... not the lurid astroturf green as in some images.....
