blovitch Posted July 22, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 22, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I returned from shooting a Wedding and attempted to download and view my afternoons work. When attempting to use Adobe CS2 to open the last 20 images on the card it tells me the files are not in a recognised format. I have been shooting Raw since I bought the DMR and this is the first time I have encountered this problem. The DMR will happily display the images, but I cant get my MAC to open the last 20 images with anything ? Can anyone suggest anything ? Cheers. -Tim
Advertisement Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 Hi blovitch, Take a look here DMR / DNG problem. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jcraig Posted July 22, 2006 Share #2 Posted July 22, 2006 I'd ask which firmware you were using in the DMR? 1.1 or 1.2? 1.2 has been known to produce this and similar problems. A lot of people have returned to firmware 1.1. The extension on the files could be in error... are they .DNG (the dot followed by the letters capitalized?) For instance, using the Adobe DNG converter changes the extension to lowercase, which may or may not be an issue. I transfer my files from a card reader to the desktop, and then delete the files from the card while in the reader. I have heard of people who "load" the files directly from the camera, rather than download or transfer them first, to the computer. This might produce the problem. I mention this last point as you say; "When attempting to use Adobe CS2 to open the last 20 images on the card" Regards,
mgcd Posted July 23, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 23, 2006 This sort of problem also comes from a corrupted card, are you downloading through a card reader?
blovitch Posted July 23, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted July 23, 2006 I am using Firmware 1.2... Are there instructions available for regressing back to 1.1 ? The only difference I noticed from 1.1 was a slighty warmer image on the preview. I am using a card reader to transfer the files onto my Mac, and then opening them from there. I always format my cards before I start work and this was the case yesterday. I am going to try and retreive the images direct from the camera later today. Many thanks for the ideas. Regards. -Tim

blovitch Posted July 23, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted July 23, 2006 Phew.... Connecting the DMR direct to my MAC by via the firewire cable resulted in a successful download of all the images. This has seriously dented my confidence however....Presumably the data on the card was somehow being handled incorrectly by the Lacie card reader I use ? Many thanks for all the suggestions. What is the general concensus of opinion over the firmware version to be using. If it relates to use, at present I am shooting exclusively RAW on San Disk cards. Many thanks again. jlancasterd Posted July 23, 2006 Share #9 Posted July 23, 2006 Tim I'm using firmware 1.2 with a 2GB Extreme III card and haven't experienced any trouble downloading and opening images via a Kingston TravelLite SD card reader plugged into either my G5 Dual or PowerBook G4 - the card reader goes into the USB2 port. I did wonder if I might have trouble earlier this week when the camera got very hot being used in the strong sunshine we have been experiencing here recently, but everything worked well. However, I don't normally use PS2 to open RAW images from the DMR. My usual work flow is via Capture 1 LE where I adjust colour temperature etc., and convert images to Tiff before doing any perspective adjustment or cropping that is necessary in PS2. I print via the Epson software that came with my StylusPhoto R800. John Phew.... Connecting the DMR direct to my MAC by via the firewire cable resulted in a successful download of all the images. robsteve Posted July 23, 2006 Share #10 Posted July 23, 2006 Tim: I was a studio in December, where four of us had DMR's. The Macs seemed to have problems using various card readers, while the camera connected directly to the Mac worked fine. I gave the Mac guy a Lexar Multi-Card reader to use and it worked fine. All of our cameras were on firmware 1.1. I suspect some of the generic or third party card readers have problems working on Macs. Try the Lexar Multicard reader and you shouldn't have any problems. Needless to say that card reader was chucked immediately.
gravastar Posted July 23, 2006 Share #12 Posted July 23, 2006 Hello,<snip> When attempting to use Adobe CS2 to open the last 20 images on the card it tells me the files are not in a recognised format. <snip> -Tim Just a helpful tip. Never use an image editing program to directly open images on a CF/SD card. Always make at least one copy to the PC first and open the PC files. Many editing programs will write editor settings back to the directory/card containg the files. CS2 writes settings data back to the source, see here for information on DNG, “Ignore sidecar ‘.xmp’ files”: Bob.
