Well - using the SDFormater has dramatically speeded things up on my 16GB x48 cards.

Curiouser and curiouser...

Chris,

Thanks. That's terrific! :)

Could you please let us know what timings you get now? :D

Inquiring minds would like to know ...

It is certainly curious, Chris. There are so many factors to consider that I doubt we will settle the issue in this format. Thank you for trying the software.

I am just curious if the language the Leica M camera is set to use for UI menus has any influence on startup speed. Could it be slower to load thousands of Kanji than simpler Roman or Greek or Cyrillic alphabets? Or does this make no measurable difference?

.... but hardly compensates for the time taken to format the card ......

..... it takes an eternity.....

If it's finished by tomorrow morning I will see if it has done anything .....

Sandisk 32GB Extreme 30MB/s, rated 10

My M settings:

auto Lens detection=35FLE

classic light metering

GND Comp off

frame lines red

focus peaking on

focus aid automatic

histogram RGB

copyright info on

WB=auto

ISO 20Ev-0.3

Have no idea what of the above affects ready to go, so listed all that seemed important IMHO.

turn on to shot-counting manually=+-4 sec

from standby=+- 4 sec

Maybe I am doing this wrong, but I keep stabbing at the shutter until it fires.

Mustang 16GB Le Mans Class 10 card

Time to Power On: 2.5 sec.

Time to Wake with LV: 2.5 sec.

Time to Wake w/o LV: 2.5 sec.

Buffer: 6 frames continuous then 1 per second.

Hey do they make a Porsche, Audi or Ferrari Le Mans Card. Must be faster than a Mustang.

Dear Jono - 2 things seem important.

1/ first shot time

2/ access to electronic controls / menus etc.

RESULT #1 - Using the well established darkroom timer method (:)), I count "5 potato" before the shutter releases.

RESULT #2 - It's around "6 potato" before the menu becomes available.

Using Camera #2 with the same card and settings - I get the same results. Around 5 potatoes to first shot / 6 potatoes to menu available.

Chris- try carrots. Makes it much better for your eyes ;-)

If you are addressing CDFormatter, then no it takes less than a minute. You took the wrong option.

I suppose I should upload the new firmware and see if everything slows down..... but as it's a one way trip I will pass on that for now.....

Don't do that! Although I'm sure this isn't new with the new firmware.

Scott

Thanks for that idea about formatting - It sounds like a good one. We're still in China and having fun.

Chris

I tried that website - impossible from here - if you get the formatter for mac, perhaps you could put in in your public dropbox and put a link here?

Useful thread this.

Curiouser and curiouser...

I just tried SDFormater with the Transcend card, and it cut the time to wake in half (2.5 sec vs. 5 sec) and also improved the startup time to 2.5 sec from approximately 4 sec.

No improvement in start or wake times with the Mustang Le Mans card, still 2.5 sec across the board, but a MAJOR improvement in the buffer, which now fires off 12 frames before slowing to one per second. This is TWICE as many as before!!!

Very curious and anxious to learn more!

I just tried the buffer test with the Transcend card and got 14 shots before the buffer slowed to one per second. The fps was not as fast as with the Mustang card, but it was close.

VERY CONFUSED!!!

Does Leica have a problem with their in camera format routine?

Great question.

I am wondering whether this formatter also makes a difference for the M9, M9-P, MM, M-E?

The M240 firmware is completely different so I doubt this will make a difference, but you never know until you try. With the M9 I was more concerned with stability than speed, which is why I stuck with the Transcend cards, as the never once locked up on me. But they are definitely not speedy in the M240.

Well - I've just use SDFormatter 4.0 to reformat a couple of 16GB Panasonic cards C10 x24 cards which had been horribly slow to start up on the M240, and now they're lightning fast! What's interesting is that a second format in-camera doesn't seem to slow things down.

SO - the finding so far is that if your M-240 seems to suffer from a slow startup, download SDFormatter v4.0 (for Mac or PC) and do a full data over-write / format. This takes a bit of time, but it makes a dramatic difference to the performance of the camera. It would be sensible for Leica to either negotiate a bundle of this software with the camera, or give a link directly to the SD consortium...

Thanks to PICO for the heads up on this! :)

You can actually depress the shutter and keep it held down, and then turn on the camera..... presumably it is electronic rather than purely mechanical actuator.....

.... although I did seem to get faster times by stabbing away .... but we are talking tenths of a second.

I'm not sure it makes much difference ..... at the end of the day we seem to have 2 distinct groups of camera users ..... the sleepy 5 second ones and the alert and perky 2 second ones....

....... if SD formatting is the issue then it is easily solved ...... although the sandisk I formatted with SDF4 seems actually slower than before ......
