Forgive me if this has been discussed, but I cant find any details from M owners. How large is the M's buffer compared to the M9?

With the M9 I was always waiting on data to be written to the card and lost many shots due to this. Does the Meastro solve this?

How many shots can you shoot quickly and then how long do you have to wait before shooting additional images?

I just tried this with a Sandisk Extreme Pro 16GB card, 30MB/s speed rating.

The M fires continuously six shots uncompressed DNG, then it slows down and fires one new shot approx every second.

It never stops completely as the M9 did when the buffer was full.

The six consecutive shots on my M is one shot less than my M9 with the same card.

Buffer clears after 24 seconds on the M9, and after 28 seconds on the M.

I will retest later when I get a new 32GB Sandisk 45MB/s card.

Best regards

Trond

I would like to know your results with the faster card as well. Your findings don't sound like much of an improvement over the M9 at all, but I think the general consensus is that the improvement in all respects is significant. Thanks for following up.

I just tried with the Sandisk Extreme 32GB 45 MB/s card.

The results are exactly the same as with the Sandisk Extreme 16GB 30MB/s card.

Speed is limited by the M, not the card.

The big improvement over M9 is the the M continues to fire on set per second forever until the card is full, whereas the M9 locks up completely until the buffer is written to the card.

Best regards

I have not been delayed by the M buffer so far. OP, what is your need so we can better understand how to answer your question.

My need is to not miss a shot. The M9 is the only camera I own that causes me to miss shots due to writing data to the card. The M9 just stop working until the write process is completed. I have never owned a digital camera that did this.

Retesting today with compressed DNG.

The buffer fills after 13 continuous shots, after that the camera slows down to approx one shot per second.

Buffer is written to card after 9.5 seconds.

Excellent improvement now that compressed DNG is loss less.

Card was SanDisk Extreme 32GB 45MB/s speed.

Best regards

I don't believe the M is a camera for action photography. The best I usually need is 5 shots in succession for bracketing. Also an SD Card faster that 30 mb is not needed as buffer is the limiting factor.

Yup ....... it fires of 5 shots in the blink of an eye and you can take another sequence straight after ...... only issue is trying to view them...... which can take a while.....

I dont use the M9 to shoot action, but I was always caught with a full buffer especially when shooting my kids. Just because 5 images is enough for you doesnt mean everyone has the same requirements.

Quite frankly in the year 2013, if a digital camera stops working after 5 shots...especially one that cost over $6000, then the manufacture should be embarrassed. This is not acceptable in a $1000 camera, much less a Leica.

Im glad Leica seems to have solved the issue.

Regarding not needing a faster card, thats really a personal preference isnt it? Even if the camera is limited, the savings in downloading the files is still significant.
