ajz Posted March 18, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 18, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wasn't sure where to post this. Seems like the post processing thread last entry was 2010. Desire: I bicycle a bit and travel with an M8/M9 and two lenses.I have evolved from using a Sony laptop and old Photoshop5 to Asus laptop to iPad and now a Samsung tablet. I would prefer to shoot raw only but am forced into making Raw/jpg combos. What is frustrating is the time sink hole of a day's end. With the Samsung (-it is fastest so far), I can eval the jpgs and copy them into PSTouch folder and then adjust them one by one and then copy them to Picasa. I unable to quickly select & batch processing of files. Even with PrianhRaw & other programs for either IPad or Android, the one by one effort is so time consuming, I felt I was in the 'darkroom' too much in the evening instead of being a good traveler -experiencing the 'place.' I want to share the images of the day with friends but the the housekeeping of transferring images, refining them, posting them was/is way too much time. Light Room at home is so quick. Any suggestions to fit the criteria of the most minimal traveler? We are talking -two cameras, two lenses, 4 batteries, charger, SD card per day, simple tablet, smart phone, rain cape, sox, underwear, couple of shirts, pants etc and of course my Brompton folding bike!...images from Hadrian's Wall, El Salvador, etc are at Picasa Web Albums - A J Zelada. (latest DC pic album is unfinished...) thanks Z

Guest tanks Posted March 18, 2013 Share #2 Posted March 18, 2013 How about a MacBook Air with Lightroom. It is pretty light.
StephenPatterson Posted March 18, 2013 Share #3 Posted March 18, 2013 Get a Macbook Air 11" running Lightroom. A minor increase in weight for a major increase in ability and speed.
vikasmg Posted March 18, 2013 Share #4 Posted March 18, 2013 I think the MacBook air suggestion is the right way to go because I'm a Mac user myself. However there's now another option. The new Windows 8 Surface Pro from Microsoft is actually very usable as a laptop with the more tactile keyboard option. It has Core i5 processor and a 128GB SSD drive with a full version of Windows. I tried it when I bought one for my son and it runs Lightroom just fine. Both the flat and the more tactile keyboards are magnetically attached and detach like the iPad magic cover. No SD Card slot but it does have a regular USB port. It's a regular Laptop in that way but can be used like a tablet.
algrove Posted March 18, 2013 Share #5 Posted March 18, 2013 Using the 11" Air with LR is so simple and will let you enjoy more of your vacation. These Air's are really the way to go. So far most tablets just cannot handle RAW images.
taosantamonica Posted March 18, 2013 Share #6 Posted March 18, 2013 + what ever the recommendation number is for the 11” Air I use a 2ghz i7, 8gb, 512 gb hard drive 11” Airbook for traveling/outings and it does lightroom and aperture as well as my macbook pro. I have a Waterford with S&S couplers for touring/brevets and between a handlebar bag and rear rack bag or panniers I can easily carry my MM/M9P, 5 lenses, the Air, needed accessories, and personal items. I have a Seven for most rides and it has a small Topeak handlebar bag for one camera, two lenses, iphone, energy bars/gels and wallet. If you need to carry it on a Brompton I’d just get a rear rack and bag. If not my Air fits nicely in the padded back of a Think Tank Urban Disquise 35 along with the above camera equipment. Rick Posted March 18, 2013 Share #7 Posted March 18, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Jerry, The MacAir 11" is really the way to go. You can load LR and PS on it and they run fine. It is much better than the iPad because you can run actual programs on the MacAir. It is what I took on my last European trip and it is going with me at the end of the summer to Turkey. More on that when we talk. A new MacAir should be out this summer and everyone is hoping it will have the retinal display. I'll look for you this weekend at the University Eye conference and I'll have my MacAir with me to show you. I'll bring all my Leica stuff. No M yet. Looking forward to seeing you, Rick
jaapv Posted March 18, 2013 Share #8 Posted March 18, 2013 Macbook Air 11" is what I use. Photoshop Elements is quite cheap in the appstore. Don't forget to take one of these small external disks, as the amount of storage is limited. The only problem you might run into in remote places is that there are no officially approved external battery packs. I found one with ReplaceDirect that works just fine. Manicouagan1 Posted March 18, 2013 Share #9 Posted March 18, 2013 I am a hiker and use a M9 to support functions much like what you describe. Each evening I have a set routine on MacBook (I use a MacBook Pro 17 (I am not as constrained for weight as you are.) What I would add to what others have said is my first step that is to run the M9 Raw DNG’s through Adobe DNG Converter. That application shrinks the size of files by roughly half and makes the estimated aperture visible. This step runs as a batch process while I am off to dinner. When I get back I load the files into Aperture, and use a standard preset to roughly adjust contrast, again as effectively a batch process. I could use Lightroom just as well, I got started with Aperture when it first came out, by the time Lightroom was a commercial product I had thousands of images already in Aperture Projects/Libraries and never considered changing. Either of Aperture or Lightroom are the way to go, they have well-defined file structures that are straightforward to back up with all the appended adjustments and keywords. Both require a full operating system but can be used with just about any modern Mac Laptop.
kdriceman Posted March 19, 2013 Share #10 Posted March 19, 2013 MacBook Air is the way to go. I carry a MacBook Air and an iPhone 5 with a personal hotspot. The iPhone 5 gives me access to LTE networks so I can process and upload almost anywhere. I don't know how this plays outside the US, but the Air is the right tool for what you're looking for IMO. jaapv Posted March 19, 2013 Share #11 Posted March 19, 2013 A Dongle works fine too. The only drawback is roaming charges.
vikasmg Posted March 23, 2013 Share #12 Posted March 23, 2013 I travel to the same two countries most of the time and I found getting a local SIM card fir my iPhone is the best way to avoid roaming. Can't use the locked US phones though.
Guest malland Posted March 24, 2013 Share #13 Posted March 24, 2013 Sure, the new MacBook Air computers, both 11 and 13 inch, are both great. I travel frequently with only carry-on luggage, but decided to get the 15-inch Retina MacBook. Sure, it's a bit heavier than a MacBook Air but the monitor is good enough for processing M-Monochrom with fine gradation and M9 files with subtle color rendition, i.e., gradation and color rendition differences that are often not visible on the MacBook Air. —Mitch/Potomac, MD Bangkok Hysteria (download link for book project)
tobey bilek Posted March 24, 2013 Share #14 Posted March 24, 2013 MacBook Air 11" and put LR on it. YOu can have two copies. That or get it right in camera as best the capture can be, and do not PP, just upload so family can see the trip in real time. You can make a generic processing and do it for all files if you wish. It will not be perfect, but better than nothing.
sanyasi Posted March 28, 2013 Share #15 Posted March 28, 2013 I am deciding between the Macbook Air 11 and 13 inch computers. In terms of price, there is almost difference--about $50 US. I am inclined to still go with the 11 because this will only be used for travel and I know I will do the serious editing when I get back home. I have read, however, that some people have had trouble using Photoshop on the 11 inch screen. They claim that some tools aren't visible. Anybody have an practical experience? Thanks
