semi-ambivalent Posted March 8, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 8, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone here know if I can safely use a Vivitar 283 with a 979 xxx M3? I'm guessing I can since it hasn't hurt my Nikon F, (I know I'll need a PC adaptor), but I thought I'd check with smarter people than I to be safe. thanks, s-a
Advertisement Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Hi semi-ambivalent, Take a look here M3 death by flash?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
hepcat Posted March 8, 2013 Share #2 Posted March 8, 2013 Yep. The flash sync is a mechanical switch. There aren't any electronics to fry like in a digital SLR. The M3 can take a huge amount of voltage. BTW, the digital Ms are supposed to not have any issues with high-voltage flashes either.

too old to care Posted March 9, 2013 Share #4 Posted March 9, 2013 Yep. The flash sync is a mechanical switch. There aren't any electronics to fry like in a digital SLR. The M3 can take a huge amount of voltage. BTW, the digital Ms are supposed to not have any issues with high-voltage flashes either. I used a 285 on my M6TTL (with electronic switch for the flash) for years with no problems too. That said, I recently added a Wein trigger just in case. hepcat Posted March 9, 2013 Share #5 Posted March 9, 2013 I added a Wein AC-plug Safe-Sync to my ancient Norman corded studio set years ago so that I wouldn't torch my DSLRs that couldn't handle more than 6v trigger voltage. I'm still using it on the Norman set. Since neither the M8 nor the M9 have PC outlets, I bought two inexpensive Safe-Sync clones that are hotshoe to PC outlet converters so I can use both my Sunpak 544 and ancient Vivitar handle-mount flashes with them.. I think the hotshoe to pc converters were $8 each; no more than the same gizmo without the voltage regulation circuitry. The cameras don't really care, but I figured it couldn't hurt either. I don't understand why Leica dropped the PC connectors on the digi Ms.
SJP Posted March 11, 2013 Share #6 Posted March 11, 2013 The M3 should withstand anything ever conceived (OK within reason), as it is indeed a mechanical switch. The M8 and its clones can handle pretty much anything as well as they used an industrial size transistor, also suitable for arc welding circuitry.
