My two favourite lenses du jour - Barcelona

I just got back from a four day trip to Barcelona and naturally, having just received my new WATE, I gave it a good old test run. Doesn't seem to need filters most of the time and I now LOVE the Frankenfinder for its little bubble thing that helps keep things level. But the bigger surprise for me was just how good the 90mm F4 is as a travel telephoto. It is really small and light, a little quirky, and gives some very nice sharp results.

Also the M8 continues to deliver stellar levels of detail. The two below (first from the 90mm at 1/180th and second from the WATE at 1/30th) were both ISO 320 and both are fantastic at A3+ so I'm going to get some 40" prints made. I even had to add grain to them, they were so noise free!

Great pics, as usual. Tim, I just saw your pictures on the Official Leica Website getting the recognition they deserve. I hope you're getting lots of lenses and M8 gratis for all the ones you are selling for them. Keep up the good work. You are inspiring.

I wish - a few new lenses would go down nicely! And thank you for the compliment!

Very film-like. What did you do to add grain?

I also checked out the Venice carnival collection linked from Leica's site. #18 is stunning.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for liking number 18 of the Venice set - you're the first person who has said that and it is my personal favourite... the woman is a star!

For adding grain I use Johny Akerlund's action for PS

Really subtle, variable and nice.

Thanks!

Nice photos especially like the Sagrada Familia interior.Impressive work isn't it?

It is impressive but I can't make my mind up about Gaudi - his audacity is amazing, he dares to be more different than most people can conceive, but when you OD on him (try Sagrada followed by Guell) it can start to feel a liitle Disney-like.

But the effect he has had on the city of Barcelona itself is electric: I have never before been anywhere where everything you see has been considered from an aesthetic point of view before construction. Every litter bin, bus shelter, overpass, loo seat. It is a truly playful and beautiful environment for real humans to enjoy. And I wan to go back there - right now!

What a city indeed! And there are mooments where the light there is far less aggressive than one associates with the med, too. To bang on about my new favourite lens again, I have found that in certain gentle lights the 90mm F4 can give a wonderful painterly look, a combination of the sharpness of the lens and the atmospheric conditions that is quite special to me at least! Though it needs to be viewed a bit bigger than this to really see it...
