likalar Posted March 5, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 5, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) M9, 35mm Summicron, 50 Summicron, 135mm Elmar ......I've been photographing, for several years, the progress of the new Bay Bridge suspension span construction. I don't have permits to be up above, so I've been covering it only from the water, in a small boat. Why this is being built: The old, presently used bridge (to the left in the color shots), is relatively unsafe in earthquakes. The white replacement bridge structure is better engineered to withstand larger quakes. It's designed to shimmy and shake without falling apart. The suspension cables have now been tightened, and the temporary support structure is no longer needed; it is being torched apart and removed, piece by piece. The 2 color shots are taken almost a year apart. The b-w shot is with a longer lens so the workers can be seen for a sense of scale. Thanks for having a look. Larry Welcome, dear visitor! tmldds Posted March 5, 2013 Share #6 Posted March 5, 2013 Wonderful documentary photos, Larry. It is such a marvelous engineering feat except for the fact that many parts of the bridge are built in China and assembled in the US.
likalar Posted March 6, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted March 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Tri, thanks! Yes, that controversy still lingers. The gigantic steel roadway sections came from China at a reported savings of 400 million dollars, mostly labor costs. Of course, the expenses of high rates of unemployment here in USA don't get figured into that "savings". You may have read of the giant crane that was designed to hoist the roadway sections into place. That too, was built in China. Larry
gshay Posted March 6, 2013 Share #8 Posted March 6, 2013 Larry, Love your pictures, But, detest the doc part, put U.S. workers to work. And the crane, what is that word I heard someone using recently that says it so well, oh yes, pure Scheiße! I apologize, that time in life for me. Not being a true gentleman, just sad watching Our country go to hell. ( sorry no politics intend) AW, beautiful pictures as usual, honestly! -G

Your Old Dog Posted March 7, 2013 Share #10 Posted March 7, 2013 They were showing shots of the bridge with lights on it on the TV tonight. It looked pretty slick. Did/or do they light it up like a Christmas tree Larry?
