Iduna, This particular tree is pretty close to a trail, so was cut back somewhat. At an altitude between 6000 and 7000 feet the Junipers now dominate the landscape. The Pinyon (Piñon) trees didn't fare as well during the drought of the last decade. About 3/4 of them died off and now look like this. Welcome, dear visitor! Along roads the dead trees have been turned into mulch and left on the ground, the affected areas making effective fire breaks.
