Thomas Chen Posted March 11, 2013 Author Share #141 Posted March 11, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) The quest of Thomas is based on three pillars (or what he calls propositions): 1] You need a fullframe sensor rather than an M8 crop sensor to get good bokeh 2] You need a good on-camera raw to jpeg converter to get the best images 3] From MTF diagrams you can determine which lenses produce the best 3D like images Bert, Thank you for your comments. The subject we are talking about is “Bokeh + MTF diagram = Better 3D image rendering?” Your assumption about my propositions is not so accurate. My stand points are: 1] I need a full-frame sensor to see the full power of Leica lenses. M240 will do. 2] I need a good on-camera raw to jpeg converter to get ready-to-see images that is compared to Leica D-Lux 4, 5 & 6 for easily observing the outcomes of various Leica lenses. I trust M240 will do. 3] I assume that “Bokeh” involves the unsharpness before and behind the sharp “focal plane”, while “MTF diagram” tells us clues about the unsharpness in relation to sharpness “on” the focal plane. 3D redition is the sinergy from both. I don’t make any statement in this subject, just quote literature from Leica and Zeiss publications. I will find the empirical result with M240 later on. I appreciate you and others’ input and will read thoroughly the paper you attached. I have Photoshop CS6 in my computer and books about it for “the best image” after editing.. My research about this subject is almost done, next post will be the last about this subject. All the best, Thomas Chen

Erik Gunst Lund Posted March 11, 2013 Share #143 Posted March 11, 2013 Thomas, this is now getting ridicules IMHO... Sorry I fail too see any real facts in your statements, quote] Erik, In the subject "Bokeh + MTF diagram = Better 3D rendering? " I just quote literature from Leica and Zeiss publications. As for what I'm going to do selecting lenses in the context of portraiture in last post, is the approach to test the ball park relationships among Bokeh, MTF and 3D-like impression. It's not an ordinary way in photography, in this regard you're right. Best Regards, Thomas Chen The short version; Your quotes are correct. Your conclusions are wrong. Lindolfi Posted March 11, 2013 Share #144 Posted March 11, 2013 1] I need a full-frame sensor to see the full power of Leica lenses. All three statements have been changed by you during this discussion, so that indicates that you are changing your mind. Still I don't agree with any of them: 1] Any fullframe Leica will do, while an M8 brings out most of the power visible in full frame 2] You can not draw conclusions from outcomes of various Leica lenses by using the on camera raw-jpeg converter of an M240 and comparing with images from versions of the D-lux, since you are varying too many parameters at the same time 3] MTF diagrams as a function of distance to the center only tell you about the in focal plane modulation, MTF diagrams as a function of distance to the focal plane only tell you something about small focus defects and nothing about bokeh or 3D rendering
Thomas Chen Posted March 11, 2013 Author Share #145 Posted March 11, 2013 All three statements have been changed by you during this discussion, so that indicates that you are changing your mind. Bokeh + MTF diagram = better 3D-like rendition? (6) Ladies and Gentlemen, Please allow me to quote a paragraph from Zeiss source before I wrap up the discussion for this subject, because Leica literature seems not to be much recognized in the Leica Forum. “The scales of the measured quantity MTF do not do justice to our perception. Some experience is needed to be able to translate the graph of the curves into a prediction of subjective perception of the picture.” (p.28 [5]) Thank you everybody for generous input and kind support for this thread. Here we have extensively discussed many topics and arrived at a consensus on many “the bests” in the areas such as: DNG file, Raw-to-JPEG converter, print, post processing software, Leica lenses’ 3D potential. Let’s take a break after laboring our way. I will come back later asking help from Bert about the connection for 10-bit display. This discussion has been interesting. Best wishes Doug Dougg, Thanks a lot for your kindness and thoughtfulness. I write the posts in this thread bearing the basics of scientific research in mind: "Firstly develop propositions (or hypotheses) through literature review, and then test the theory (the relationships among variables) by empirical experiment." I not yet make any conclusion, just waiting for the opportunity of experiment. Via discussions in this thread and the methodology I develop, I will be able to detexously control the parameters in photography, adding some spices to the meal.
