Another dead D2...

The sensor on my D2 has just given up the ghost - 2 weeks after the UK 3-year warranty expired. As it was exhibiting classic symptoms of the known sensor fault (it would display the various commands, reformat a card, fire the flash, etc, etc - anything but produce a view in the viewfinder or take a picture...), it's gone to Milton Keynes with a copy of the Leica 'extended warranty' statement.

It will be interesting to see how long the repair takes and if there is any problem with the warranty.

unfortunate John, but there is an upside

you dont have to worry about waiting to see if the sensor dies lol

and usually they do a little refurbishment in the Leica house

hope its a short wait

cheers

Leica Camera AG is offering all owners of the LEICA DIGILUX 2 a customer service free of charge even beyond the stated warranty period. Specifically, this refers to exchanging the digital camera's sensor in the case of a rarely occurring malfunction. Leica Camera AG has opted for this extended warranty due to the fact that there have been a few reports of this malfunction caused by faulty manufacturing which also affects some other makes' cameras.

Prolonged use of the camera in tropical climate conditions has occasionally led to effects such as black stripes in the image or even a totally black image. This malfunction can be the result of sensors whose specifications do not meet the respective Leica Camera AG production and testing standards. Even though the malfunction occurs only after prolonged use in extreme conditions, i.e. perhaps even after the warranty period has expired, thanks to the service described here, the LEICA DIGILUX 2 customers can rely on having their camera repaired free of charge over a longer period of time. Thus, supported by this measure, Leica Camera AG is ensuring that the LEICA DIGILUX 2 will retain its value after having been discontinued.

John, Leica are very thoughtful to look after us D2 owners. I sent my D2 when the sensor started to exhibit the fault.

My D2 has been returned to me after a 7week 20,000km trip to the Leica hospital.

Here's a tip.....and I will not explain "the why's"...........(there are reasons).

Send your D2 direct to the Solms Service Center, after communicating with them by email.

I cannot thank Leica enough for their excellent after-sales service. (I now own 4x Leica's) and I will continue to tell my friends how they looked after me.

You are not alone. My D-2 just went this week-end. I wanted to use it as a second camera, took a few test shots and noticed that the confirmation was very weak in the finder. And so were the images. Hazy, with irregular colour streak accross. My dealer was good as always, just bring it in; we will take care of it. It is on it's way to Solms.

Now that folks, is one of the reasons why we keep buying Leicas. (My son had a leading brand SLR with a bent pin in the CF card slot; well within the warranty period. They charged him $300. He is beginning to think Leica.)

I have just sent mine off. Can you comment on the refurbishment - what is it? Don't tell me quicker RAW times!

refurbishment is a general cleanup

not a religious experience culminating into another design

Hi, sorry if this has been asked before, but is DMC-LC1 covered by Panasonic just as D2 is, I mean in case of this famous sensor failure? Still had no problems with mine, knock on wood - more than 2 years, but wanted to know just in case.

Thanks,

Gennady

FWIW, Panasonic UK replaced the lens system on my LC5 (Digilux 1), well out of warranty, free of charge.

worth noting Andy...thanks

i still wish Panasonic would put out a global approach that stated their position clearly

this was the response i got to an email enquiry about LC-1

Dear Rob,

Thank you for taking the time to contact Panasonic with your enquiry.

Panasonic Australia is not aware of a Recall on the Australian Released DMC-LC1 cameras. This may be the case with overseas models,

there is not issue with the Australian Versions.

If you have a fault with a DMC-LC1. It will need to be looked at by a Service Center.

The closest Service Centre to a Post Code #5241 would be the following.

COMPLETE VIDEO SVCS P/L 21 GEORGE STREET STEPNEY

unconvinced by this result, i had no option but to invest in 4/3rds equipment

to support the then existing gear

now i find i rather like 4/3rds better

so it goes

Thanks for the lead on who to approach on the sensor problem.

My LC1 died on me on day one of an extended 'once in a liftetime' trip through Asia.

A bummer to put it mildly, even although I had my D-Lux 3 as backup, there were many 'if only' moments of missed opportunities.

Les, I know exactly how you feel...my D2 died 3 weeks before a "special" family holiday to Tokyo, Paris and London. My faith advised me to buy a D3/L1 for the trip.

Now I have my D2 back fixed under warranty, and the D3/L1 images are so much better than those from my D2. But I just can't part with my D2, so i'm keeping it as a backup.

I got my D2 back today - just over 9 weeks since I handed it in. There was no hassle and nothing to pay.

Given that I had had the camera for over 3 years and used it quite extensively I'm very impressed by Leica's willingness to do these repairs free of charge. It's what I'd call a REAL guarantee.

thats what a lot of people say John

did they do any other work, like clean it up a bit ?

It's not obvious that they have done any work other than replacing the sensor, but the camera certainly looks very clean overall.

I sent my LC-1 to Panasonic last week for a new sensor. I am waiting to hear back what it will cost. Because it is out of warrantee they charge 50 for evaluation which goes against repair costs. The plastic cover on my rear lcd is cracked as well.

This great camera died the day after I got my new L1......maybe it knew! I was getting some weird colors out of the shots just before it died....the the sensor went to some crazy color pattern. I will be curious to see if Panasonic cover some of the sensor cost.

Dick
