Tim Hogendoorn Posted February 14, 2013 Share #1 Posted February 14, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Goodevening all, I have a problem with my Leica M8. Like the title says it seems like it is stuck in A mode. It seems as something with the shutterspeed dial is wrong, because if I turn it, it mostly shows the shutterspeed the camera chooses but sometimes while moving and pushing the dial slightly, the correct light metering mode appears (the arrows and a dot). I also updated to the last firmware. Are some of you known with this problem, or something I could be doing wrong all of a sudden? Any help is much appreciated. Thank you for reading. Advertisement Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Hi Tim Hogendoorn, Take a look here Stuck in A mode?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted February 15, 2013 Share #2 Posted February 15, 2013 As I said on RFF. If this is an M8.2 you are in S mode. The arrows indicate over- or underexposure in that case.
Mr_Jones Posted February 15, 2013 Share #3 Posted February 15, 2013 It sounds like he's turning the shutter speed dial so surely he can't be in S mode the whole time, the description does sound like a dodgy contact in the shutter speed dial. Having seen the Mark Norton teardown those dials and switches looked pretty well engineered though.
jaapv Posted February 15, 2013 Share #4 Posted February 15, 2013 Quite possible, as he indicated on RFF that he has an M8 classic, so it probably is a mechanical problem in the aperture dial.
marknorton Posted February 16, 2013 Share #5 Posted February 16, 2013 Here is a picture of the shutter speed selector. You can see it's a disc which rotates with the shutter speed dial and the metallic "fingers" connect pads on the flexible circuit board to an inner track which runs all the way round. By looking to see which pads are grounded, the microprocessor can determine what the selected shutter speed is. Welcome, dear visitor! From what you say, I think the disc is either not rotating properly with the shutter speed dial or else the contacts are not making contact. It may be, for example, the central screw, which secures the disc to the shaft of the shutter speed dial, has come loose. Otherwise, it may be down to dirty or broken contacts or possibly a problem with the circuit board. It's a simple repair because only the top has to come off the camera but I daresay Leica will find reasons to inflate the repair cost. You might find a local technician who can do the repair for you, or else enlist the help of someone who is comfortable with these things if you are not yourself. Olyamk Posted February 17, 2013 Share #6 Posted February 17, 2013 Happened to my m8.2 once, and persisted till I switch the camera off and on. It's more like a bug rather than a bad contact, IMO
