One way to chase away birds is an abrupt movement, opening a door or suddenly getting up and walking, or pointing a camera at them. I was minding my own business, standing by the tripod mounted camera, when this bird placed itself on a fence post less than 20 feet away. It was having a long hard look at me. Excellent opportunity for me to slightly adjust the camera and take some shots. Luckily, at that moment my system was configured with an equivalent FOV of 1120 mm focal length 135 film. Thanks again.
