I think there is now a genuine technology battle going on in the smaller sensor arena, led by Panasonic and Sony. I don't think it had gathered pace with the speed a lot of people had expected over the last few years, Panasonic seemed happy to fill the niche for m4/3 sensors and didn't have any competition. In fact even Panasonic went with Sony – the sensor in the GH3 is a Sony sensor, the same that Olympus uses.  Whether the new sensor design developed by Panasonic will ever be a serious contender is open to doubt; there are advantages as well as disadvantages to this design.
