DaveO Posted January 27, 2013 Share #21 Posted January 27, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) i kind of like the idea of a fixed lens, however i agree that i just can't get over the idea of the RX1 not having a viewfinder......i can't take it seriously without it! With the added accessory, it becomes much larger....taller than an M-E, in fact. I don't think the X2 has a viewfinder, yet it is $ 2,000 and doesn't score anywhere near as well as the RX1. Advertisement Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Hi DaveO, Take a look here Sony RX1 Ranked #4 on DXO Mark at 93. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

sfage Posted January 28, 2013 Share #24 Posted January 28, 2013 Yeah, I am really confused by this. No VF... but a bu11sh1t little flash that no pro would use, anyway. They would use a "real" set of flash gear. It's just a rich guy's bobble. .. and the X2. Who knows what they were thinking. Obviously they don't read the comments here. Everyone was bitching about the lack of a VF on the X1. Obviously it didn't phase them and they didn't care. Yet another reason why I took my 2 grand and bought a 5d2

Yet another reason why I took my 2 grand and bought a 5d2 The flash is better than the M9's internal flash. A pro might use external flashes and wireless triggers anyway if they were using it for something other than fill flash. I do have to agree that the lack of a VF (as well as the price) is a deal killer for me.

They would use a "real" set of flash gear. A 'pro' can use the on board flash of the RX1 as a nice fill in flash with ~ -2 flash compensation dialed in. The flash can also be used for wireless TTL with off camera Sony flashes, or as a wireless trigger for other (studio) flashes. I wouldn't call that 'bu11sh1t'. peterv Posted January 30, 2013 Share #29 Posted January 30, 2013 Oh, and one more thing, the on board flash can sync up to 1/2000 (thousand) with the RX1 leaf shutter. All these features together are nice options to have, nothing to sneeze at, IMO.

lanetomlane Posted January 30, 2013 Share #31 Posted January 30, 2013 I'd love to be able to comment on the image quality from the RX1 ..... I received mine yesterday, but it didn't work! ________________ Cheers, Tom New one being delivered. Can't wait to pick it up next week in Seattle. I must say, I couldn't fault B+H on their replacement service. _______________________ Cheers, Tom
colonel Posted February 27, 2013 Share #32 Posted February 27, 2013 Just got an RX1 Its a unique and awesome camera Despite the lack lustre Sony packaging (come back Fuji X, all is forgiven!) the camera is surprising well built, one of the best I have ever handled. The pictures are, well, you read the reviews .... This is "probably" one of the worlds finest FF sensor teamed with undoubtedly one of the best 35mm lens All lenses have compromises, this seems to be some distortion which is mopped up by either Lightroom or Sony's in camera software if you use jpgs The menu is also quite terse (for Japanese manufacturers anyway) and it minimalist, no shake reduction for example Will it replace a M9/ME ? no. it doesn't do f1.4, the leica lens is better and I slightly prefer the draw of M-E + 35mm lens combination, but, and I never thought I would say this, it is worth north of £2k for sure! dhsimmonds Posted March 6, 2013 Share #33 Posted March 6, 2013 I agree. Maybe the RX1 is just an experiment, to see how the market reacts and what technical results it achieves. It may well be followed by a "full size" version, one with EVF (or even a hybrid) and interchangeable lenses, on the footsteps of Fuji. Just imagine the price of an interchangeable lens version of an RX1. Even Leica might be shocked at the Zeiss lens prices! However I would still like to see it happen. Rumored Sony NEX-9 Could Cost More Than The RX1 | Ubergizmo With these small pocket-able compacts going full frame, it will be interesting to see where current DSLR full frame cameras will evolve into and also where the Leica X series will go. lanetomlane Posted March 18, 2013 Share #37 Posted March 18, 2013 Did you read the instruction manual first? No, I didn't have to. Straight out of the box it displayed an on screen ERROR and then a number which I can't remember. I live in UK but had bought it in the States from B+H. I spoke to someone at Sony US and they suggested I initialise it but that didn't work; they said it had to be returned. I got a replecement from B+H which was waiting for me when I went back to the States in February. Really pleased with the camera, but just realised over the weekend that the manual focus doesn't work. People call Leica's quality (although I've never had a problem) but with my Sony experience it seems they are not on their own. __________________________ Cheers, Tom Photography by Tom Lane
dhsimmonds Posted March 25, 2013 Share #38 Posted March 25, 2013 Bad luck Tom. I thought that a company like Sony would have an international warranty service. I have to say that I have never had a problem with any of my Sony's (A900 and A77) so I have never needed to test their warranty service. However their sensors are just wonderful and used in a number of cameras including Nikon and the Olympus OM-D which I also have and neither have I needed to test the Oly warranty service! However their sensors are just wonderful and used in a number of cameras including Nikon and the Olympus OM-D which I also have and neither have I needed to test the Oly warranty service! Hi Dave I was originally told by Sony in the US that if the UK repaired it they would charge as though it was out of warranty. When the second RX1 failed to focus manually I managed to speak to their repair facility in Wales and they said because it was considered to be a "Pro" Camera they would repair it under warranty. (Had it been a RX100 it wouldn't have been covered.) Anyway, I sent the camera back on Friday so I'll have to wait and see what happens. I did use the camera (on auto-focus) to photograph a demonstration in Manchester the other weekend and was really pleased with the results. I'm going to use it when I travel on business, ceratinly not to replace my M9-P, or awaited M. I'll let you know how I get on with the Sony. ___________________ Cheers, Tom
lanetomlane Posted March 26, 2013 Share #40 Posted March 26, 2013 Latest update on my Sony RX1 repair. I've just received a text message to confirm that Sony have received it and advising its return should be in 5 working days. If it happens I would consider that good service. ___________________ Regards, Tom
