Leica X1 about to go

The X2 is a reasonably handy and discreet camera and we will keep it. However, neither the X1 nor X2 is of any real use for photographing wildlife.

I had ordered a new M but that is now cancelled after experiencing an M9 and the X1 on a recent 10 day trip which included some wildlife and some street and landscape photography through South America.

It is evident that I am not skilled enough to grab focus quickly in fast moving situations. My teenage son, using a Canon 7D and L glass achieved a substantially better hit rate where he could let the camera do the work and just concentrate on getting the picture he wanted.

X1/X2 focus much too slowly for fast paced shots. The rear screen also does not stand comparison with current technology - not even close. Start up times are also poor. M9 is lovely: but it requires a substantial investment of time and I think regular practice to get really good results from it. When I retire I might have this time, but right now the camera stays in the cupboard between trips.

Canon 5DMkIII has been ordered, with 24-105L. I already have a Canon 40D kit and some decent glass, so the ability to share with my son will be useful. I abhor the lugging around of SLR kit, but the cameras don't "get in the way" in use, so the compromise will be made once again.

The next trip is Finland and Norway to see the Northern Lights and possibly some whale watching. This will be interesting as we are likely to have the 5DIII, an M9 and the X2 available.

So, bye bye X1 shortly!

Well, wouldn't you know it. Since drafting this post a couple of says ago, my wife has had second thoughts about cancelling the M order and I am "instructed" to withdraw it pronto this morning. (The email was sent on Saturday so I doubt our Leica guy has actioned it. I will have to blame husband error once again).

She (the more skilled photographer by far in our household) is becoming quite attached to the M9. This actually belongs to my father in law, but he has decided that what he really needs is a top notch point and shoot to combine with his camera phone! This is not as daft as it sounds: he is retired and is a very keen cyclist, doing cycle events all year round in Germany, plus training every day. You can't carry much on a bike (pointless investing in carbon cranks if you pan to carry an M9 around), and he has been getting some quite incredible photo and video results from his Samsung Galaxy SIII phone!
