David Monkhouse Posted December 31, 2012 Share #1 Posted December 31, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) As a user of Capture One v.6 but not the pro version I am currently using the 60 day trial of v.7 and the pro version. I spent part of yesterday playing with its ability to produce a black and white image. Not doing much in B and W I posted the image I had worked on in order to generate a few comments, complementary or otherwise as part of my learning process but so far nothing has been posted. I don't think I can assume that the circa 50 viewers have no problem with what I posted but this forum and its members have taught me much so here's a second try. The original and its B and W alternative... Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Dougg Posted January 1, 2013 Share #2 Posted January 1, 2013 David, for what it's worth, my opinion favors the color version as having more subtle and gentle look, nicer "atmosphere." Given that B&W was your goal, sorry!
jaapv Posted January 1, 2013 Share #3 Posted January 1, 2013 I miss quite a bit of nuance in the sky in the B&W version. And on the shoreline for that matter. Personally I prefer the colour version.
k-hawinkler Posted January 1, 2013 Share #4 Posted January 1, 2013 I played a little bit with the color image in CS4 to make it B&W. In this case I find it pretty difficult to preserve the gradual changes in hues and tones in the color image and turn them just into subtle tonal changes in B&W. However, it's these slight nuances that contribute to the attractiveness of the color version. The tree branches in combination with the structure in the water resemble somewhat a chinese character. Cute.
David Monkhouse Posted January 1, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted January 1, 2013 Gentlemen, Thank you for your comments which have been most helpful. My interest in B & W stems from the postings of pictures taken with the MM. Obviously I have to convert a M9P raw file and the Capture One v.7 software seemed a way forward. However as you have pointed out much of the atmosphere of the coloured shot is lost. That is down to me and needs further research and practice or does it. Perhaps the shot I chose to convert was not suitable to be B & W. In September of 2012 I visited Auschwitz and on my return found on some shots the colour intrusive and converted them to B & W by reducing the saturation and playing with the contrast, brightness and exposure levels (using v.6). Is this original and immediate feeling of what will create the atmosphere that one wishes to convey the way to select the shot for B & W treatment as opposed to pulling a shot that is, as all three of you say, better in colour? The following link to those shots is below. Zenfolio | photographs by David... | Auschwitz and Birkenau
C_R Posted January 3, 2013 Share #6 Posted January 3, 2013 You mention the MM: beware, Capture One 7 doesnt support the MM, and no one knows whether the Phase One guys will fix that in future versions. For B&W conversion, C1 is really great. Especially when you make use of its up to 10 layers for local adjustments. Carsten
coup de foudre Posted January 27, 2013 Share #7 Posted January 27, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just a head's up -- I heard from a reliable source that C1 will be able to work with Monochrom files in the future... How soon? ... didn't say.
