herbkell Posted March 22, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have always used PhotoMechanic to import and rename files but although the M8 DNG files are recognised and can be imported they don't seem to be able to be viewed - all I get is a black preview with a couple of stripes on it. Â It now seems that I will need to use Lightroom to import my M8 DNG's and it seems to work great except I cannot get LIghtroom importer to show the previews in the import box even if I tick "enable preview" - it seems to work fine on JPEGs but not on DNG. Â Is this a fact of life i.e. you cant get previews before import of DNG files or am I mssing something. Â Any help would be appreciated. Â thanks

I've tried it on my Dual G5 mac and will later try it on an dual intel Macbook pro to see if there's a difference.  Best  Tim

Englander Posted March 22, 2007 Share #5  Posted March 22, 2007 Herb, On a Mac, at least you are not getting previews in the download dialogue because the OS will not render them. In other words, yes it is normal in LR not to be able to see the previews before the files are downloaded and larger previews rendered by LR. OS X not rendering Leica DNGs is also what is inhibiting Aperture.  By the way, PhotoMech will now work with the Leica DNGs, at least in the present 4.5 beta. The images are rendered pretty large, but you cannot get 100%. Photo Mechanic Public Beta  The addition of integration with Controlled Vocabulary for keywords is, I think, really important and elegant. LR will bog down terribly with a large keyword vocabulary; a large CV in PM works great and it interfaces with iView, also.  Joe
Guest sirvine Posted March 22, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted March 22, 2007 This is a problem with OS X, not Lightroom. In fact, once you've converted the DNGs to Abode DNGs (as opposed to Leica RAW DNGs--confusing, I know), if you try to re-import to LR, you should see previews. bsmith Posted March 22, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted March 22, 2007 Even with PM 4.5 beta , you only get a small thumbnail for DNGs. I called CameraBits, they said Adobe won't license them to extract the larger view, the way Bridge creates the previews. They're aware of the problem, but at the mercy of Adobe. They suggested using Adobe Convertor to convert to std DNGs than you'll see full size previews. I tried this, but once converted, Capture One LE no longer recognizes the converted DNGs ! It will automatically launch when you plug in the card reader. Then, will give you all the choices, including converting to DNG, of renaming and saving your images. PSCS3 will be out in May. The download beta is 685 MB zipped.
