carlprad Posted December 16, 2012 Share #1  Posted December 16, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello  I own a leica R4 and noticed that the R7 has a "palm/thumb support' added to the "camera back". (I've attached an image.)  For anyone who owns an R7, does this added support make a difference in handling?  Can it be added to my R4?  Also, are there any other LEICA, or third-party, items that can be added to the R4 in order to improve the ergonomics of "handling"?  Thank you all in advance. You had to change the camera back to the newer back to have the thumb rest. With my Leicaflex SL, that's also how you activate the meter, so it just became natural for me. Â I like the thin profile of the R4 & SL. stack62 Posted January 6, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted January 6, 2013 The thumb grip of the R7, R6, and R5 are more comfortable than the R4, especially with heavy lenses and shooting in vertical position. All of these backs will fit the R4, although the one from my R7 didn't activate the frame counter of the R4, but the back from an R6.2 worked fine with the R4 frame counter. As an old rangefinder guy I use my left hand as the main support directly under the lens - so the right hand doesn't need the grip support as much. You can try KEH.com to see if they have a back from an R5, R6 or R7 for sale. It may not be on their website, but if you call or email, they may find one for you.
