carlprad Posted December 16, 2012 Share #1  Posted December 16, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello  I own a leica R4 and noticed that the R7 has a "palm/thumb support' added to the "camera back". (I've attached an image.)  For anyone who owns an R7, does this added support make a difference in handling?  Can it be added to my R4?  Also, are there any other LEICA, or third-party, items that can be added to the R4 in order to improve the ergonomics of "handling"?  Thank you all in advance. You had to change the camera back to the newer back to have the thumb rest. I am not sure how easy it would be to find a back at this point though.  Rich
S. Wong Posted December 17, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted December 17, 2012 I tend to just hold the thumb winder out, and use it as a support for the camera. With my Leicaflex SL, that's also how you activate the meter, so it just became natural for me. Â I like the thin profile of the R4 & SL. My Nikon D80 is chunky and plastic in comparison
stack62 Posted January 6, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted January 6, 2013 The thumb grip of the R7, R6, and R5 are more comfortable than the R4, especially with heavy lenses and shooting in vertical position. All of these backs will fit the R4, although the one from my R7 didn't activate the frame counter of the R4, but the back from an R6.2 worked fine with the R4 frame counter. TomB_tx Posted January 6, 2013 Share #5 Â Posted January 6, 2013 I have a couple R4 without the formed back, and an R6 which has that back. As an old rangefinder guy I use my left hand as the main support directly under the lens - so the right hand doesn't need the grip support as much. Newer folk, used to the "one-hand" dSLR style would like it better.
dave.gt Posted January 8, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted January 8, 2013 I like the thought of switching a back to the R4...until then, I will continue using the Leica leather half case as it gives me plenty of grip and protects the camera to boot. Â BTW, where would one find a back from an old R6 camera?
stack62 Posted January 10, 2013 Share #7 Â Posted January 10, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use the half case from an old Minolta for better grip with my R4. You can try KEH.com to see if they have a back from an R5, R6 or R7 for sale. It may not be on their website, but if you call or email, they may find one for you. They're in Smyma, Georgia......right in your backyard I believe.

sc_rufctr Posted March 31, 2013 Share #9  Posted March 31, 2013 I use an R-Grip on my R6.2. It works well but it does interfer slightly with the strap connection.  I found this on a Google search. They come up on eBay often. About $50. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! steveclem Posted March 31, 2013 Share #11 Â Posted March 31, 2013 I much prefer the hand grip of this original version to the later one.
dave.gt Posted March 31, 2013 Share #12 Â Posted March 31, 2013 The power winder was a gift to me from a fellow forum member. And I picked up the almost new grip/strap at KEH for $10!
