What nex?

Sorry about the pun but I need some advice.

I'm looking to buy a Sony nex as a third body to my M9s, to use with my apo Telyt 135 and my two cv12 and cv15 wides.

I don't use these lenses very much but it is very distracting for me to switch lenses on the M9s which use my most used pair 35/90.

I'm also not bothered by not using an EVF and I can use the back screen... So I need just a simple body, no flash, no fancy menus as I will use the camera just in raw, manual focus, max quality.

What I care for is quality of the image and lightness of the camera and focus peaking for focusing the 135.

I looked at the nex 3, 5, 5n and 5r, with prices ranging from £170 for a used 5 body, to £370 for a new 5n body, to £450 for the new 5r with a lens I will not use.

To this I will have to add a novoflex adapter.

Which should I go for? They all seem to be using the same sensor, and adding features I would not use on each newer model... Or is there some advantage for what I plan to use it for in the different models?

Thank you.

Thank you, but that is about £1,000... I would have kept my M8.2.

say whaa? not here....there are lots of GXRs around for less than $1k with the A2 M Mount....and prices are still falling.

760 pounds new on Amazon.co.uk...probably cheaper 2nd hand in the UK.

but yes, you should have kept your M8.2 ;)

I use the Hoodman Cimena Kit on the screen of a first gen Nex-5 with a Goggled M elmarit 135 and a since jettisoned R 135 2.8 as well.

If you're hand holding, attaining Critical focus on a NEX with a 90 or 135 telephoto, especially a 1.5 crop factored 135mm or 202.5mm focal length, even with peaking, is a million times easier if you're looking through a finder and bracing the camera against your face. Holding it out away from your body at arm length with a bigger manual focus telephoto is not a that great of an experience.

Focus zoom is a great NEX feature with the longer lenses too.

I cant say much about those superwides, although I find it easier to focus and compose more moderate wide angles, (35mm, 28mm, and a 25mm zeiss) WITHOUT the hoodman, at waist level like a TLR. The experience is probably better with a built in VF.

So, I would say the NEX 6 is the way to go. Best sensor (today, anyway) with a built in finder. $848 for the body only at B&H (today, anyway). Get a proper M to NEX adapter ($180 to $250), and buy an extra battery.

For use with my CV 15 and 25 mm lenses, I researched and chose the Nex 5n (which I was able to buy used -- prices are coming down with release of later Nex models). It has all the features I need. Regarding the M-mount/Nex adapter, I got the reliable Fotodiox one (cheaper through Amazon) for about $25. I've since added optical viewfinders (40mm and 24mm - to match the effective focal lengths of the lenses on the Nex sensor). With wide angle lenses, the framing in the optical viewfinders needn't be overly precise. The Ricoh would be lovely to own, but quite a bit more expensive. And the in-depth Reid Review comparing both cameras is quite favorable to both
