comparison of Leica X1 & X2 to Fuji X-E1

I've been using a Leica X1 for nearly three years, and I have found it a really sweet piece of machinery. I must say that I was bummed some months ago to find a dust bunny on the sensor. So far, photoshop is drug of choice. Not only was the camera out of warranty, I am seriously reluctant to take the time and energy to have it shipped to Solms and back. As far as I know, with the X1 the presence of something on the sensor is pure and simple the luck of the draw.

Has anybody had the chance to compare the new Fuji X-E1 to the Leica X1 or X2? Clearly the industry is moving to something more than a compact but less than a DSLR. And in my book that "something" is really attractive.

I have used the x-pro1

The Fuji sensor and lenses are superb. I would say sharper then the X2

The problem is that Adobe has not really come to grips with the raw, so you need to use the Fuji jpgs (the first camera I have ever used when you can't improve on the jpg using the raw file) which is limiting, although they are of very high quality

Also, the X-E1 is small (the same size as the X100, which is bigger then the X2) but the lens is not. So + the 50mm f1.4 (which is the best current Fuji lens) its not really pocketable.

So X2 pros:

Smaller, lighter, quieter, better raw, marginally faster autofocus

X-E1 pros:

Interchangeable lenses, sharper in the middle (not necessarily the edges), cheaper, pretty good EVF included

If size is not important, then the X-E1 is hard to beat, and its still pretty small compared to a DSLR. If size, weight and subtlety is more important, then think of the X2.

Lastly, you should get a quote for fixing your X1. It would be worth it, even if you decide to sell it immediately afterwards, rather then just throwing it away

Interesting comments Harold.

I would agree with you about hmisbell getting the X1 fixed - well worth it. I use the tube and filter add-on on the X2 which does of course minimise the dust blob possibility.

I recently got an XE-1 to cover the focal lengths that the X2 doesn't, and find it very impressive. Not perfect of course, but improvable, probably with another firmware update.

Take note that Capture One is strongly hinting at support in v7 due shortly. I don't particularly like it but needs must until Adobe eventually come up with better Raw support in LR which they seem to be working on.

Interesting comment, I''m looking for a small size high quality camera to use beside my x1 when I need a tele lens, probably the xe1 is a good choice ..I would be interested in portraits (head and shoulders) in available-low light, if you have any additional comment I would appreciate, thanks

I have an X2 and a Fuji Xe-1. I use the fuji for hiking and Leica for street photography. I like the images and the setup better from the Leica. However, the Fuji is a very good camera. The Leica is smaller and easier to stuff into my iPad mini bag. I would not give up either... But I alway have to have the right thing for the right setting. Also, having interchangeable lenses means you always are confronted with choices... What to bring, what to use. For the simple life, Leica.

For what it's worth, I have an X-E1 plus the 35 and 18-55 lenses and I've been delighted with it while waiting for my new M240 to arrive (having sold my M9 some time ago in anticipation). I've tried the X-E with a variety of Leica glass (using the Fuji official adapter) and it does well; however, I cannot really see any great benefits over the XF lenses (particularly the 35mm) other than the faster manual focus of Leica lenses. I covered the ergonomics and focus system in this article.

The XE-1 functions well as a street camera, particularly with the 18mm Fujinon (which I don't currently own) but weighs 505g. With the excellent 35mm Fujinon it is a heavy 575g. As you point out, it is also much heavier and bulkier than the tiny Leica X2 (316g, plus 30g for the EVF)

I have played with an X2 last year but am now seriously considering buying one simply because of the convenience. It is one of the smallest and lightest APS-C cameras on the market. Only the new Nikon Coolpix A, which is curiously very comparable with the X2 on paper, is lighter at 300g. Apart from other considerations, though, the Nikon is a tad too wide at 27mm and I much prefer 35mm as a one-stop lens.

To summarise, the X-E1 is an excellent camera and is much more versatile than the X2. But as a carry-everywhere, light camera with excellent IQ, the Leica takes some beating. A further plus is that M240 owners can use the same EVF for both cameras:).

So, my idea to put the X-E1 beside my Leica x1 to cover the medium tele range is not so bad...if only that 56mm/1,4 arrives on the market...

Has anyone comments about the autofocus speed of the X-E1 compared top the X1 or X2 ?

To avoid confusion and to put the record straight, the 316g I quoted for the X2 is not correct. I had put the Fuji on the scale, so those weights are correct. I took the Leica 316g from the spec sheet but didn't notice this was without battery or SD card. I just put the Leica, with battery, on the scale and it is in fact 355g. The EVF adds 30g to make a total of 380g. Incidentally, if you use the tubular filter/hood adapter (with filter), this adds a further 40g.

I had an x1 (now x2) and also a fuji x100 and x-pro1 (besides some other cams).

Overall I prefer the color and tones I get from the x1/x2 over the Fuji colors.

The Fuji sometimes render very nice skin, but then sometimes seem a bit flat to me.

Regarding resolution sharpnes the Fuji might be slightly better.

The Fuji AF is faster IMO.

The most important difference IMO is having a viewfinder included in the Fuji, and on the other side having a little smaller camera (x1/x2).

That's a good question. I bet it depends on the Fuji lens. I'll give it a side by side comparison and see. JD

After about a year I had lots of dust bunnies. Crank up your contrast en clarity way past normal and you will see them all. Eventually, by 18months it got so bad I didn't use the camera anymore until it went in to Solms. Took about 2 months and all is fine now. They also fixed my broken flash under warranty.

I just did a quick side by side comparison. The focus speed seem comparable between the X2 and Fuji XE-1. I think with some more time the X2 would come out to be a little quicker, in part because of the wider angle lens. I was using the 35mm on the Fuji. jD
