Question about "Ninety Nine Years Leica" book

it's 200+ pages...not 99!

I had the chance to look at the book yesterday in the Leica Salon in Tokyo. I was also surprised to see on the front cover it quite clearly states 'ninety nine pages', which I did find odd, as the book is around 2cm thick and definitely has more than 99 ;)

Wondering it it is just an error in translation.....

Should have gone to Amazon before posting... the publishing company is called 'Ninety Nine Pages Verlag', hence the confusion.....

I think their concept was to create/ count the double- pages. That way it makes about 200 ...

One other "serious" mistake is, that they mixed a portrait of a LEITZ-worker (Herr Casper Michaeli) up with

O. Barnack´s portrait. And this in connection with a photograph taken BY Oskar himself. He wouldn´t

have liked this.

I enjoyed the book a lot. Although I got quite a bit of LEICA-literature, there is always something

new for the enthusiast, esp. in this book. The makers were obviously taken off the ground by their

creativity pretty often, as far as text, typography, layout ect is concerned.

All in all: splendid work, IMO, just the right stuff to go through between X-mas and New Year.

Best

GEORG

I picked a copy up at Leica Mayfair yesterday and had a first pass through it last night.

It's a mix of facts and interesting photos tied together with a lot of superficiality.

Content wise, it reminds me of a cross betwen an advertising leaflet and a book from a discount store such as 'bargain books'.

As others have said, it's a coffee table book; it does not intimidate and would be very suitable for casual guests, non Leica users, to flick through.

I think there was one omission/error : no mention of the MP and stating the M7 was the only film option remaining. I will have to scan through the book again to verify this - perhaps I missed something.

I was floored by the total lack of any mention of the MP - both the 1956 limited run MP and the 2003 version of the MP, which is approaching its tenth anniversary. A ten year production run and no mention of the MP??

These are two monumental and bewildering omissions in an otherwise enjoyable and well executed book.

Can anyone address these two glaring omissions?

According to Leica, there will be a 2nd addition of the book shipped in early January.

I Don't know if they corrected some mistakes from the first addition, but maybe??

I'm one of the self Portrait winners from their Flickr page, and will be in the 2nd addition book. I should be receiving my free copy sometime this month.

Interesting read and learned a few things. No one tome can cover all that Leica was and is. Still a pleasant cross-section of stories and topics.

Can't answer if worth the price as received as a gift, and what a nice one at that. No it won't change your life, but yes demonstrates some of the uniqueness of our favorite brand.
