IWC Doppel Posted November 28, 2012 Share #1 Posted November 28, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well I am getting better with my printing and liking the fine art papers, particularly the textured papers. I have experimented with sample packs and A4 prints in B&W (12 of the same sample image) I have A-B'd until I have found an order of preference twice ( Perhaps more meaningful after a full 24 hours of ink drying), I have also asked the same of two others, one a photographer one not. I will do a few more 'shuffle' and A-B again to check consistency but interesting how consistent it is. I have found the top papers being Hahnemuhle, particularly Museum Etching 350g, the averaged results so far (accepting this is far from scientific) HFA Museum Etching 350g HFA William Turner 310g HFA German Etching 310g HFA Torchon 285g Epson Cold Press Natural 340g Innova Soft Textured Natural white 100% Cotton 315g Fotospeed Natural textured 315g Innova Cold Press Rough Textured 315g Colourbyte Soft Textured IJ553 310g Innova Soft Textured Natural white 315g I will review again and revise if there are any differences of note. I may try a few more sample packs
Advertisement Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Hi IWC Doppel, Take a look here Textured Matt Paper choices. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
IWC Doppel Posted December 2, 2012 Author Share #2 Posted December 2, 2012 I have now 'tested' myself blind 3 times, in natural and tungsten and spot light. I have shown some inconsistencies with Cold Press Natural placed 5th, 7th and 9th and German Etching which ranged from 4th to 8th, the rest are within 2 or so places and Museum Etching has been 1,2, and 1st. William Turner, 2,1,2 My limited conclusions for B&W with matched settings HFA Museum Etching 350g HFA William Turner 310g Innova ID+FA 22 Soft textured cotton 315g HFA German Etching / HFA Torchon 285g Fotospeed Natural Textured 315g Epson Cold Press Natural 340g (Really surprised, I did notice that this seems marginally less inky black in places, but is stellar for shadow detail) Colourbyte IJ553 Soft textured 310g Innova IFA 11 / IFA 13 Innova IFA 12 I am getting more and more nervous about blind testing and picking a winner in case I place German Etching in anything but the 1 or 2 slot
Paul J Posted December 3, 2012 Share #3 Posted December 3, 2012 I've not tried all your others (looks like you've been having fun!) here but I've been a fan of the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag for a while. They do a 500gsm which is really nice. Also a double sided one, perfect for folios and handmade books etc. Worth a look, IMO.
IWC Doppel Posted December 8, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted December 8, 2012 Well I have completed two more 'blind' a-b tests and the results are the same I have ordered 25 A2 sheets of Museum Etching 350g, I will be able to compare to cold press in a more meaningful way as I have more than one piece of A4. Plus I am going to spend time with Gray scales to look at ink density and the low values from 1-20 in particlular. I can hopefully develop a system that allows me to understand the relationship between soft proofing and print a little better, at the moment it is not good enough. I have calibrated using a colour monkey and printed out scales but want to see if I can actually see low ire's on my display and develop a work around if not I am looking forward to my fist A2 print as well
IWC Doppel Posted December 8, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted December 8, 2012 PS sorry for the confusion I said German and meant Museum in the earlier post
