"...Programers are devloping software which emulate high quality expensive gear so you don't need to buy high quality expensive gear..."

yes, the guy at the end spoils it. He obviously knows nothing about photography

I just liked the peek in the factory ...

  • 2 weeks later...

Software able to make a phone's built-in camera emulate the quality available from a real camera? It made me think that perhaps April 1 had arrived a mere eight months late.

I then wondered where Bloomberg TV had dredged this 'expert' up from.

Basically, he’s a ‘Technology Analyst’ at a company called Mintel, which claims the ability to “provide you with the Intelligence you need, in time to stay ahead of the market. The result? You will not only make informed decisions, but the right ones, at the right time.”

On his Linkedin page, Gee is modestly described as an “individual with excellent experience researching and writing market intelligence reports that deliver actionable insight based on analysis of qualitative and quantitative data…capable of quickly learning and distilling information."

And his professional qualifications? - a degree in philosophy.

While I must confess to having done my share of appearing in radio and TV programmes as a 'talking head', I like to think that I've always managed to stay within my area of expertise.

Best regards,

Doug

great critique Roy!

when I heard that line I immediately thought: WTF? it is amazing how 'experts' are rolled out by the media. What in idiot.

He may as well have said, "Soon NASA won't need to make space based telescopes as users on earth will be able to emulate them with 'miracle' software on their Earthbound Ipad camera and achieve identical or even improved results...:o"

At least this is a case of harmless buffoonery: last bight I watched a documentary about how easy it is to get accredited by an online 'diploma mill 'to be a 'Forensic Expert' in the US and to then give 'expert' evidence in court- sending people to death row with bogus 'teeth bite analysis' and the like... Some seriously scarey stuff.

According to the voice over, Leica has seen "an eightfold increase in profit" (paraphrasing) in the past two years. If that statistic is true, it is great news. Not many megasize corporations can make that same claim (if any at all can). Unless Leica's board of poo-bahs make some monumentally Kodakesque ( a.k.a. STUPID) choices, Leica should be on and be able to remain on solid ground in terms of solvency.

The voice over claimed that Leica builds "50,000 to 60,000" cameras a year. That sounds like more than I thought the total production to be. I would have guessed about half that number.

Does anyone have any verification of the 50 to 60K claim? It seems that Leica would want to keep their production numbers secret. Makes me wonder if this was just a guess on the reporter's part.

Well said. I wonder how much these idiotic "analysts' are responsible for driving companies into the ground. They know the cost of everything and the VALUE of nothing... I put them in the same category as the credit rating agencies...

Don't forget all the compact digi Leicas, which I assume are included in the 50-60k quoted ?

If at first the outcome fails, then just lower one's expectation. Repeat until satisfied.

At the level of his reality, his head would explode from the output of a Leica.
