philipus Posted November 22, 2012 Share #1  Posted November 22, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's funny coincidence that there's another insurance-related thread just below concerning UK insurance.  Today I visited ABN Amro in order to transfer our various insurances with them to our new flat here in The Hague. At the time our current home insurance was concluded I had a lot of Canon equipment so I upped the coverage of film-related items quite a bit.  The ABN Amro rep told me I could further increase the coverage to cover my Leica gear. However, the drawback of doing so is that should something happen to the equipment its value would be reduced by age, as per normal insurance practice. I have a feeling it would be difficult to convince an insurance agent that, for instance, a 1999 Summilux really is worth what it is going for in the used market.  A further drawback of the home insurance is that it only applies at home. This surprised me a bit a few years ago when I moved here. In Sweden, where I am originally from, it is very common that the home insurance policies cover equipment also outside the home. As an example, I received compensation for a mountainbike stolen outside the law faculty at Uppsala University. The compensation was a new mountainbike. When that was in turn stolen outside of my gym here in The Hague, my ABN Amro home insurance wouldn't cover it.  The alternative to upping the covered value on the home insurance is a "valuables insurance" ("kostbaarhedenverzekering"), which will cover the new value of a piece provided it was bought within a year or the value as stated in an appraisal which is not older than three years. This insurance also covers accidents, such as dropped cameras, and theft and is worldwide. However, it only covers personal computers outside the home if they are being sent to a service point which imho is pretty negative. The premium would be about 40€ for 15000€ worth of camera kit.  I am interested in what other insurance options there are here in The Netherlands that could be useful for Leica users?  Also, are there insurance companies in other countries that one should consider for one's camera equipment?  Lastly, dear moderators - if this best fits in the other insurance thread then feel free to merge.  Cheers and thanks in advance

DigitalHeMan Posted December 28, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted December 28, 2012 Hi Philipus, Â I appreciate I am replying to a thread that is a month old, but in case you haven't decided on an insurance company yet, I have all my Nikon gear insured with Willkommen in der AKTIVAS VERSICHERUNGSB. Don't think they are the cheapest in the world, but they are pretty flexible with their coverage - for example I can insure 10k of gear, but say I never leave the house with more than 6k at any one time, and then I pay a lower premium on the 4k that remains in house. (also don't have to specify which 4k that is). Standard coverage is worldwide, covers both professional and amateur use, and gear is always insured for new value (or whatever value you choose to insure your gear for). Â They also will cover photography related gear, for example studio lights and laptops. Â When I was looking, they were the only insurer that would cover theft from a tent, which was important at the time. Â They are a German company, but that has never caused any issues or restrictions.....
