UPDATE - internet survey of M8 experience - more good than bad!

Where did you learn that Canon has a 50% failure rate for Error 99? I have owned 5 (10D, 20D, 5D, IDsMkII and IDMkII) and have yet to experience an Errror 99. I must be either very lucky or a statistical anomaly!

One the other hand I must be very unlucky or a statistical anomaly as I have experienced 100% failure rate on my Leica camera!

Aren't statistics fun?

You misread my post. My point is that an error 99 is not a failure, but a simple reset, as is the resetting of the M8 by removing the battery. Adding a small hidden reset button somewhere on the camera (under the base plate?) would have avoided this part of the "issues".

I have not read this entire thread to see if someone else has pointed out the following fact but here goes.

First thanks to anyone who attempts to quantify in an objective sense the issues or frequency of issues with the new Leica M8. Cheers my hats off to you. That said, this survey is next to meaningless for the simple fact that anyone can take the survey and hence taint the results regardless of whether or not they own a Leica M8. Believe it or not there are people who do not own an M8 but want to see this camera fail, or perhaps less severe just want their negative opinion of this camera to taint every discussion. Unless we can get "numbers" from only Leica M8 owners we are chasing our tails in a circle.

Regards and my first post here on LUF

Welcome over here Ted :) I am happy to report that this forum is hardly afflicted by such individuals as you describe. I know you frequent places where that is more the case.

Ted - welcome. Of course you're right - but looking at the information that's coming through, there's not much - if anything - that smells bad ... The survey closes Thursday, so we'll see what it brings out. Whatever the limitations, I'm getting an overall impression that people on this forum feel it's helped dispel one or two concerns that had started to turn into shibboleths...
