Â Mark, Â Do you have either a 11819 50 Summicron or a 50 Summilux ASPH, that you could post some comparative corner and centre crops, to see just how good the new Summicron is? I suppose we will not see the real benefits until used on an M-240 or maybe on a MM but of course that would not really show the APO aspect. Â Ian, Â My thinking was the previous 50 Summicron was probably good enough for the M9, with adequate resolution, low distortion, vignetting and nice Bokeh. Admittedly the two I had were not but I think I was very unlucky. I currently use a ZM 50/2 Planar on the M9 and I cannot imagine my images being much improved by the APO Summicron, with the limitation being operator not optics. I acquired some years ago a 50 ASPH Summilux but peronsally did not like the way it drew and its focus was incredibly stiff, so part-ex'd it for a MATE. I almost felt it was too sharp for the M9, so I wonder if this might be the right lens for the additional definition required for the 240. Given that it is cheaper than the APO Summicron and one stop faster, the APO would have to be very good indeed to warrant its purchase over the ASPH. marknorton Posted January 24, 2013 Share #66 Â Posted January 24, 2013 There's certainly nothing wrong with either the Summicron (which, with its simple focussing mount, I use as a rangefinder reference lens) or the Summilux and it will be interesting to see how the new lens performs in comparison. Â I'm not sure the extra performance will be that easy to tease out of the camera. A mis-focussing camera or camera shake will likely ruin the theoretical advantage and it's here the M240 may provide benefits with more accurate focussing. Then factor in that the M9 is not Leica's highest resolution platform, it makes me think the M240 or the MM are the best cameras to show this lens' performance. The benefits naturally are small in absolute terms (as Summicron and Summilux Asph don't leave too much to improve upon to begin with) but they can be seen on any M camera. However I guess the benefits mostly are different from what you're expecting. Â Â ... or maybe on a MM but of course that would not really show the Apo aspect. It will.
