A Metz 45CL with an SCA340 (Nikon FG) module in A mode will provide a huge amount of light (especially bounced) and will trigger the synch speed (and drop the ISO in Auto) on the M8/M9. It will also work with Nikon DSLRs in A mode without causing TTL panic on the camera (older Nikon TTL flashes cause these Nikons not to fire flash at all).

On the comment of mixing ambient and flash light, I'd avoid doing this with artificially lit scenes unless you also gel the flash with an 85A. Otherwise, you will get sickly warm shadows. With most cameras, using as low an ISO as you can with flash will help make sure that the flash (and its lower-noise color temperature) dominate the scene.

And any Nikon-stype off-camera cord (like the SC-17) will work well with the Leica.

My favorite is a shutter slow enough to pick up some ambient light and underexpose the flash some. This makes stunning pics with little effort in low light.

If you are balancing with incandescent light, gel your flash with an 85 filter. That helps prevent multiple white balances in the same picture.

I prefer natural light with my M8. But a few weeks ago I bought a Miranda 500 CD for € 0,50 on a flee market. Measured the trigger voltage with a Volt meter. It was under 4V so I concluded it would be safe to use on my M8. Here's a first (not very interesting) shot, bounced from the ceiling. L1122280 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

This Miranda 500 CD Thyristor flash can be found on Ebay every now and then for little money.
