Paul, The formation was a lot longer, but only this much fit onto the sensor.

Yup, one first hears the birds, then one tries to find 'em visually, sometimes unsuccessfully.

They can fly very high.

Best photographic opportunity is when they are relatively low and use thermals to gain hight for the next stretch.

In one instance the cranes were circling directly above our house and were so close to the ground that we could feel the pressure waves emanating from their beating wings. That was an incredible experience.
